Skip the shopping! Spike the eggnog! Get yourself to the first ever NOIR CITY XMAS, which is guaranteed to put a little Noir in your Noël!
The Film Noir Foundation proudly announces its first annual NOIR CITY XMASon Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at San Francisco’s historic Castro Theatre. The eveningwill feature a double bill of two off-beat Christmas classics: Mitchell Leisen’s REMEMBER THE NIGHT and the ultra-rare shot-in-San Francisco comedy-noir MR. SOFT TOUCH, directed by Henry Levin.
In addition to the double feature, they’ll be some Christmas surprises, the announcement of the NOIR CITY 9 schedule, and the debut of the next NOIR CITY poster.
The Preston Sturges-penned REMEMBER THE NIGHT (1940) co-stars Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray who later portrayed one of the most infamous noir couples of all-time in Billy Wilder’s Double Indemnity(1944). Assistant DA MacMurray brings suspected shoplifter and big city hardcase Stanwyck home to his family farm, so she doesn’t have to spend the holidays in jail. This deftly directed Mitchell Leisen gem entertainingly blends elements of screwball comedy, noir-tinged drama and romance.
In the oddball obscurity MR. SOFT TOUCH (1949), tough guy Glenn Ford stars as a World War II vet who moves into sweet but sexy Evelyn Keyes’s homeless shelter. She doesn’t know he’s seeking vengeance on the gangsters who stole his nightclub and murdered his partner. This combination of hard-edged noir and broad comedy features an array of San Francisco locations and will be presented in a brand new 35mm print.
