Montessori schools around the world to celebrate the International Day of Peace

International Day of Peace is September 21

On Monday, September 21st over 65,000 children in Montessori schools around the world will sing the song, “Light a Candle for Peace” to celebrate the United Nations International Day of Peace. Beginning in New Zealand and ending in the Hawaiian Islands, the song will be passed around the world from Montessori schools in different time zones to fill an entire day with children’s beautiful voices singing about peace.

Established by a United Nations resolution in 1981, September 21 marks International Day of Peace as a global holiday in which millions of people from all around the world participate in various events to end personal, political and planetary conflicts and promote peace.

Shelley Murley, a Montessori music teacher form Vancouver , British Columbia created the Sing Peace Around the World event, wrote and recorded the song “Light a Candle for Peace” and is offering it for free download for use at the event. Ms. Murley invites Montessori and non-Montessori schools to participate and sing as a community at an assigned time during the day.

Montessori children attending schools in 31 countries around the world are already signed up to participate in the Sing for Peace Around the World event. Maria Montessori’s commitment to educating for peace earned her to be nominated twice for the Nobel Peace Prize. It is only fitting that her legacy of Montessori education has inspired future generations to also work towards peace. Contact Shelley Murley to sign up and participate in the Sing for Peace Around the World Event.
