You're probably wondering how anything labeled M12 is being revealed in the Magic: The Gathering universe while M11 is still fresh off the presses, but the artwork for the Magic 2012 Chandra's Phoenix was painted live at GP Gothenburg by Aleksi Briclot. Players not attending were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of this burning bird posted by @magicprotour on Twitter.
What does the artwork and card name for Chandra's Phoenix tell us? It certainly indicates that Magic: The Gathering's core sets will be catering to planeswalker "signature cards", such as Garruk's Companion, Chandra's Spitfire, and Jace's Ingenuity, all featured in M11 with their respective planeswalkers.
The presence of Chandra here also indicates that it's very likely that the "Lorywn 5" will become the core set planeswalker cast, alongside some branded creatures and spells. Since phoenixes have often been placed in the rare slot, Chandra's Phoenix may signal that planeswalker signature cards are fair game at the rare level (The M11 batch only occupies the common and uncommon slots).
So here it is, artwork from the future of Magic: The Gathering's 2012 Core Set - Chandra's Phoenix!
