Kern County is part of the San Joaquin Valley Air Basin, which has some of the worst, if not the worst, air quality in the nation. There are many different sources of air pollution that contribute to the problem. One of the major industrial sources is the crude oil and natural gas production industry.
Some of the largest oilfields in the country are located right here in Kern County, including Bakersfield itself. The largest California natural gas field is in Kern County as well. In 2012, Kern County produced over 141 million barrels of oil and 163 billion cubic feet of gas from 42,875 wells.
Many who live here, though, have no idea where these fields are located nor how much oil and gas they produce. Additionally, although most oilfields also produce natural gas, some produce much more oil than gas, and vice versa. With that in mind, here is a list of the 5 largest crude oil producing fields in Kern County. A separate list of Kern County gas producing fields will be given in another article.
The production data shown is from 2012 and provided by the California Division of Oil, Gas, and Geothermal Resources (DOGGR).
