Rafael Nadal made up for lost time by defeating Juan Martin Del Potro 4-6 6-3 6-4 in the BNP Paribas Open final in Indian Wells, California.
Although he has been out for seven months with a knee injury, Nadal did not show much rust as he withstood the power of Del Potro of Argentina. This was the 53rd ATP singles title for Nadal who will move up to the No. 4 world ranking.
Martina Sharapova was hardly tested as she beat Caroline Wozniacki 6-2 6-2 to claim the women's trophy. This was the second Indian Wells title for Sharapova who won in 2006.
As a result of Sharapova's first title of the season and the 28th of her career, the Russian star takes over the no. 2 position in the world rankings.
