Week 9 of the college football season logically has to restore order. The events of Oct. 26 can’t possibly be as maddening as those on Oct. 19, when more than half of the top 10 and virtually every traditional power in the SEC lost. But there could be similarities to last week’s biggest game, when the Florida State Seminoles slaughtered the Clemson Tigers -- and the Oregon Ducks are certainly capable of doing the same to the UCLA Bruins.
The Ducks can beat anyone by 51-14, even the No. 12 ranked Bruins. Oregon will need those kind of wins for the computers, now that the BCS has put it at No. 3 behind Florida State. But with the Bruins and the Stanford Cardinal next on the schedule, the Ducks can still make a leap to No. 2 again.
At this time last week, this game had the potential to be even bigger. Yet the formerly unbeaten Bruins lost their first chance to knock out a Pac-12 power when they fell in Stanford. Now an upset over Oregon might not put UCLA in the elite of the BCS, but it will help in the running for the Pac-12 title.
Last Saturday proved that any elite team can lose in any fashion, assuming they were ever elite to begin with. Back-to-back losses to the Cardinals and Ducks may prove that the Bruins aren’t ready for the top, while the Ducks can truly prove they’re right where they’re supposed to be.
In the meantime, here is a list of the biggest games of Week 9, although the most notable ones last week weren’t on many people’s radar.
