It's summertime (really, even if you live in the Sunset), which means outdoor shows and the closing dates of the Stanford Jazz Festival this weekend:
- The Stanford Jazz Festival brings the family together Friday night for a jam session featuring much of the Stanford Jazz Workshop faculty. That means Joshua Redman on sax, Dave Douglas and Nicholas Payton on trumpet, George Cables and Taylor Eigsti on piano, Madeline Eastman singing and more. The show starts at 8 p.m. at Dinkelspiel Auditorium on the Stanford campus. Tickets are $36 and $22.
- The Junius Courtney Big Band, with Denise Perrier singing, kicks off the Afrosolo Festival on Saturday with a stomping afternoon of swing-era sounds. The free show starts at 1 p.m. at Yerba Buena Gardens in downtown San Francisco.
- Trombone Shorty, a force of nature who's bumped New Orleans jazz into a whole new era, closes out the Petaluma Music Festival on Saturday. The Petaluma Fairgrounds gates open at 11 a.m., and tickets are $25 to $80.
- Pianist Taylor Eigsti, a Peninsula native and one of the strongest young voices in jazz, closes out the Stanford Jazz Festival on Saturday with a special date adding agile vocalist Becca Stevens to his trio. Tickets are $36 and $22 for the 8 p.m. show at Dinkelspiel Auditorium.
- Ken Berman, a fiercely imaginative young pianist who's drawing comparisons to the young Keith Jarrett, appears with his trio (including bass ace Kai Eckhardt) at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Bach Dancing & Dynamite, on the beach south of Half Moon Bay. Tickets are $30.
