What is Push Notification?

Sports Tap uses Push Notification to keep you up to date on sports scores.
Sports Tap was one
of the first apps to
use Push Notification

Push Notification was added to the iPhone and the iPod Touch with the iPhone 3.0 OS. It is one of the nice features of the upgrade, and many users expectantly awaited the first push-enabled applications, while others simply wondered what all the fuss was about. So, just what is Push Notification?

Push Notification allows an application to listen for messages being 'pushed' to it from the server. So what's the big deal? Why do we care about this? The iPhone does not allow us to run multiple applications at once, but through Push Notification, our apps can provide uses even when they aren't running.

This is similar to the mail application that comes with the iPhone. It can receive mail and alert you that new mail is in your inbox even if you are busy playing Tap Tap Revenge or the iPhone is in sleep mode.

SportsTap is one of the first applications to utilize Push Notification and allows sports fans to keep up with their favorite team. By turning on Push Notification in the app, you can receive alerts when your favorite team's game starts and when the score changes. And you don't even need to have the app loaded. It will honk at you, letting you know there is a score update, and you can quickly check what the new score is without ever leaving the lock screen.

There is an open source PHP/MySQL back-end for APNS. So if you want your own integration of push notifications on your own server, here you go :)
