Palace of the Inquisition in Cartagena, Colombia

Heretic's Fork
The Heretic's Fork is just one of the torture devices you'll see.

A must-see destination in Cartagena, Colombia is the Museum of the Inquisition.  As you enter in to the museum, you'll first see all the 'tests' the inquisitors used to ascertain if someone was a witch, including a list of the questions they asked.  The accused was also weighed to see if he/she weighed an appropriate amount - which led to the deaths of many under/overweight people - and you'll see the scale they used.

The next room in the museum contains a display with lots of instruments of torture designed to bring out a 'confession' from the accused.  As you wander around taking in all the devices, you can't help but wonder - What in the heck were they thinking?

Nuts & Bolts:  The Museum is right on Plaze Bolivar in the Old City.  It is open 7 days/week, but hours are slightly shortened on Sundays.  The entrance fee is US$5.50 for adults and $4.00 for children.

Wow! I went to Cartagena in aug 2009 and visited this museum. It was horrifying, creepy and fascinating at the same time. The place was rather small but the torture devices were there on display. I went on a very informative guided tour. I recommend any going to Cartagena not miss this. There is so much more to the city of Cartagena- the people were wonderful, friendly and I saw no crime or any other thing that made me feel unsafe. I spent 6 days in the old walled city and would go back in a heartbeat.
