July 27, 2010 - President Barrack Obama made his first public statement Tuesday and condemned the leak of more than 90,000 confidential U.S. military Afghanistan war documents.

During his speech Tuesday afternoon Obama said while he has concerns about repercussions of the leak of the more than 90,000 secret raw intelligence reports out of Afghanistan, “these documents don't reveal any issues that haven't already informed our public debate on Afghanistan."

Obama said the leak of documents that appeared on WikiLeaks “could potentially jeopardize individuals or operations” on the battlefield.

He also said the issues reflected in the documents are old news and cover a period before he announced his new Afghanistan strategy.

CBS News reported that Obama suggested the war strategy he revealed in December of last year was designed to reflect the concerns in the leaked military records.

The records reflect the fact that "for seven years" under President Bush, "we failed to implement a strategy adequate to the challenge" in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The CBS News report stated the WikiLeaks documents cover a period ending in December 2009 and paint a dour portrait of the war effort. The documents, it said, detail civilian casualties, corruption and confusion, as well as allegations that Pakistani intelligence is working with the Taliban to attack U.S. troops.

It further stated that under Obama’s new strategy things have not, by most measures, improved in Afghanistan: Casualties are the highest they've been in nearly nine years of war, the Taliban is stronger than ever, and coalition efforts to create self-sustaining governments have been relatively ineffective.

This reminds me of when Daniel Ellsberg released the Pentagon Papers and the Administration said he was the most dangerous person in America. The atrocities he exposed got us out of Viet Nam. Maybe this will get us out of Afghanistan.
