Over the past few years, the home decor industry has seen quite a few publishers take a tumble. From Metropolitan Home, to Country Home, InStyle Home and our beloved Domino...good magazines have not survived the economy. Though great decorating publications still exist, there remains a need for more. That was until we came across Rue Magazine.
Rue Magazine is an online resource that pairs decorative finds with fashionable trends. Modernly vintage and stylishly chic, Rue offers readers an assortment of design ideas. We were so fortunate to catch up with Rue Editor in Chief, Crystal Gentilello to discuss the magazine, design inspirations, and her home.
Q: What inspired you to start an online magazine?
Crystal: Last April I was feeling unfilled with my day job and realized that no one was going to hand me my dream job…I had to create it. So I decided to take charge and craft a career by marrying my two lifelong loves: interior design and the written word. And the idea of Rue was born!
Q: Where does the name Rue come from?
Crystal: Rue is the French word for street, and embodies the notion that through the magazine, we hope to provide a pathway for our readers to a stylish life. We also just loved the way it sounds and looks, to be quite honest!
Q: How does Rue Magazine differ from other publications?
Crystal: We really try and provide an experience for our reader that extends beyond the pages of the magazine. To that effect, we create videos to go along with some of our feature stories for behind-the-scenes access, we share playlists with our entertaining stories so you can recreate the mood at home, we provide downloadable recipe cards, stationery, and invitations you can print and use for your next party, and much more! We also pledge to cover homes, products, and people that are at once inspiring, accessible, and stylish.
Q: What can your readers expect?
Crystal: Other than lots of inspiration (I hope!), our readers can expect for their Rue editors to be accessible, approachable, and always eager to hear from them. In fact, that’s why we love social media so much and view it as an integral part of our mission! It allows us to be part of an online dialog with our readers, advertisers, contributors, and friends.
Q: We love how you compliment fashion with décor. What trends do you see coming off the runway and into the home?
Crystal: A return to classics! Using natural textures like bone, feathers, raw wood, and lace. I love how it’s bringing us back to the earth and into nature.
Q: Describe your design style in three words
Crystal: Clean, warm, and classic.
Q: What are five décor favs we can find around your home?
Crystal: Elegantly scented candles (currently loving Jo Malone’s Pomegranate Noir), lots of throw pillows, a warm neutral on the wall, an abundance of mirrors (I love them for the light they reflect), and light bulbs with a tint of pink (tip: they make everyone look more flattering!).
Q: What is your favorite room in your home?
Crystal: Why Living rooms are always my favorite room of any home. It’s the most public of all the spaces, and as a girl who loves to create beauty for others to enjoy, it speaks to my desire to provide a warm and inviting space for friends and family to feel beautiful in.
Q: If you could have anyone design your home, who would it be?
Crystal: This is a hard one, but I’d have to go with Darryl Carter. His designs leave me breathless. Darryl gets timelessness, space, and style better than just about anyone.
Q: What do you like to do in your free time?
Crystal: I love to run. It’s my quiet time to clear my mind, listen to good music, take in the beautiful city I’m fortunate enough to live in (San Francisco), and put all my stresses in perspective. I never feel more beautiful than after a good run.
