Indianapolis Colts 2010 preseason: A look at the return to health of S Bob Sanders

INDIANAPOLIS – With each week, it seems the feeling grows.

This post is about Indianapolis Colts safety Bob Sanders, and it's tough to find a way to start, because if you've been following the Indianapolis Colts in the 2010 preseason, Sanders' story seems to have been as repetitive as it has been unusual.

That's because the story is that Sanders is doing OK.

He's making progress.

And all signs point to him playing.

Sanders, a two-time Pro Bowl selection and the 2007 Associated Press National Football League Defensive Player of the Year, reiterated that this week, his first availability with the Indianapolis media since last Thursday, when he made his preseason debut.

“You can always be sharper,” Sanders said of his two-tackle performance against the Buffalo Bills in Toronto last Thursday. “To me, I feel like I did OK, but I could be sharper. That's basically what lets me know that I'm still a little rusty and I have a ways to go ...

“I did feel good,” he said. “I felt good about some of the reads and some of the plays I made, but as I said, 'There's always room to grow.'''

When is a player feeling a “a bit sharper” and a "little rusty" news?

One answer is when the player has missed as much time as Sanders has missed in his career, and the other is when that player makes as much of a difference and as much of an impact as Sanders does when he plays.

Besides, enough is written about Sanders when he's not playing that it's excusable to write about him a bit “too often” when he is playing, and during his debut Colts Head Coach Jim Caldwell said the 2004 second-round draft played relatively well.

“It was good to see him back out there,” Caldwell said. “He ran around well. I think for his first time out, he did OK. His standards are pretty high, but I do think that he did all right for his first time out.”
