The International Burn a Koran Day organized by the Dove World Outreach Center in Florida is drawing fire from all quarters, including America's military. The event is meant to commemorate the anniversary of the World Trade Center terrorist attack, and is planned for Saturday, Sept. 11.
The planned book burning has been met with disgust, protest and condemnation, and now one of America's top soldiers, General David Petraeus, claims the planned burning of the Koran will endanger US troops overseas. Petraeus, International Security Assistance Force commander and the head of NATO in Afghanistan, released the following statement Tuesday:
Images of the burning of a Koran would undoubtedly be used by extremists in Afghanistan — and around the world — to inflame public opinion and incite violence. Such images could, in fact, be used as were the photos from Abu Gharyb. And this would, again, put our troopers and civilian in jeopardy and undermine our efforts to accomplish the critical mission here in Afghanistan.
Terry Jones, Senior Pastor at Dove World Outreach Center, and author of a new book, "Islam is of the Devil," claims: "We believe that Islam is of the devil, that it's causing billions of people to go to hell, it is a deceptive religion, it is a violent religion."
The planned protest is just the latest in a series of provocative actions from the self-described "New Testament Church." The church, which was founded in 1986, has long been controversial in Gainesville. The Koran-burning protest is just the latest in a string of high-profile "protests on other issues, such as homosexuality, same-sex marriage, and abortion. Indeed, Terry Jones has gone so far as to endorse the actions of the notorious Westboro Baptist Church.
All the publicity is disturbing, and may in the end be counter productive. It seems important to keep the whole thing in perspective. This is a tiny church of less than 50 people, led by a man of questionable intellectual and mental stability. One wonders if Petraeus, by giving these religious nuts the media attention they crave, is doing more harm than good.

I think we should have a "Burn down the Dove world outreach center" day...to be celebrated on Sept 10th. This stupid minister is going to do more harm to this country than needed.
Amen to it! This person is INSANE!! What an idiot!
you mean, that they can burn are flag, kill all the people they want and you can sit there and be an american,,,,burn that koran untill all there skin melts off there face and they become just,,,,,,,history,,lolololol
Editors - The word "Christian" should be removed as a tag for this article (and any/all articles relating to this topic). Christianity follows "thou shall not judge", not "let's burn the holy books of other religions"!
Everyone else - As a Christian, I hope that there is enough public outcry against this mislead "church" that this event does not come to fruition. As an Firefighter/Paramedic, I am completely against this "remembrance of September 11th" as it does NOTHING to actually honor those who have fallen and surely does NOT unite us as a country! All an event of this type can and will do is enrage those who stand against the U.S. and fuel future attacks against our country as a whole and anyone representing our country abroad (expats, soldiers, etc.).

You and your comment are idiottic. Look around you, in 15years you will be a minority in your own country, soon enough these muslims will take over the world and forse us to live under their rules. In Canada we are already chocking, they are producing 5 children to our 1 or 2 and what is worse is that a very large part of them dont even work, they are sucking everything we have to offer and give nothing in return.. open your eaye A**whole befor it is too late
I am a christian and this minister cannot truly be a christian if he thinks it is ok to do this Koran book burning. We are to love everyone, but we don't have to condone their sins. I have two military sons and I know if this man does this, it will start more killing of innocent US soldiers in Afghanistan. Does this so called minister want this blood on his hands? It is not up to him to judge people who believe in the Koran. I as a christian do not believe in this book, or the Muslim religion, but it is wrong to burn it. It is up to God to bring punishment to those who are not christians and christians who sin also. This man has evil influencing him because Satan wants to use him to start more battles and more of our soldiers killed. I pray today in the name of Jesus, that you God and Christ our Saviour prevent this man from carrying out this horrible act of buring the Koran books. I know God's heart will be saddened if this man does this. It is wrong and all Christians need to pray today and voice their opinion that this man is doing wrong and he is teaching things are not of God and not of the bible.
honestly speakin here.....if your worried about your troops on the other side why not just get them out of there....for real...bring them home...screw them..weither that book is burned or not will not change a thing.. most of them will continue doing their hanus crimes...(sorry for the spelling lol) and another thing...what's this that we allow them in our country...and they don,t contribute!!!...when my grandparents came to this country they worked and i mean worked..to provide for their families and to help build a better society...they werent givin vans...and welfare!!!.....going back to the troops...stop spending so much time trying to make it better over there cant u see your not helping!!!! instead they are killing your soldiers....anywho i've also had enough of they're inconsideration towards our people...and to our country!!
This is utterly Disgusting! I, myself, am a full blown Christian and I believe that it is because of people like this that we are losing so many followers. And I don't blame them for leaving. If the Christ Followers of today would just learn that love and compassion are all you need, the world would look so much different these days.
oh really ? what do you have to say about a religion such as their s that promotes killing all that are not of their belief,, stonning women, killing innocents all over this world.... the burning that is planned is not enough,,, burn them all..............................
Mr. Jones is preaching hate to his congregation. As a believer and follower of Christ, I know we cannot bring people to understand the love, mercy, and compassion of Christ with displays of hatred. "What Would Jesus Do?" He wouldnt do that.
Well, I am not Jesus. I am just a regular Canadian citizen who is fed up of looking at these savages. I work everyday, I pay taxes. I had a very interesting conversation with my local postman....We were talking about welfare, he informed me that about 75% of the Arabs in the city I work in collect welfare checks.....As I sit here working 50hrs a week I look outside my shop and all day long I see these stupid women wearing their rags on their heads, long sleeves, black coats or those hideus black disgusting robes they wear in 90 degree weather pushing double strollers while the rest of their brood walkes behind them. I see pijama/sandal wearing males sitting and sipping coffee at the Italien cafe s all day long... yes and dont forget while the rest of us are buying cost efficient cars these mud fuckers are all driving their huge gas guzzling vans..... oh and where am I ....yes working my 50hrs a week to support these ingrates.... So again I am not Jesus... Im just a regular fed up canadian citizen.
islam is the devil? Funny, I thought the religion of islam was older than christianity, thus older than the "devil". Maybe if Jones got an education and fought the temptation to prove his apparent inbreeding, he'd be aware the islam is infact a beautiful and insightful religion. Its extremists like him, and the Taliban, that continue this conflict. Your hate will not stop their hate. So just sit down and shut up.
LOL. Islam is not older than Christianity and Satan exists in the Koran as well. Try workin on that education thing :)
LOL. Islam is not older than Christianity and Satan exists in the Koran as well. Try workin on that education thing :)
Christ lived hundreds of years before Muhammad. The idea of the devil certainly is older than both. So maybe you need some education yourself. While we're at it, what is so "beautiful and insightful" about cutting off people's heads or hands and grinding women under foot in this day and age?
burn his "church" and also westboro baptist "church" as well. Fuck right wing lunatics. Fuck the repuplicans, and fuck the conservatives. Keep these evil republicans out of office. They only care about their hugt fortunes of wealth and hate the poor, non white, and non Christians. Raise taxes 50 percent on the richest people in the country. if they don't like it they can fuck right off.
Obviously a short-sighted move on the Pastor's part. How could that NOT further endanger the military boys and girls overseas?

What the hell, just like all kinds of religions there are bad and there are good. Just because some muslims did a bad thing does not make us all bad. Muslim religion is the devil? excuse me don't disrespect our religion its hurtful. if im not mistakin isnt the koran the full bible. ALL other bibles are missing chapters because that religion did not want to follow it. The koran has it all with no take outs. This is horrible i hope the church burns down in flames and that ministor gets what he deserves such a disrespectful man boy i hope he gets it. HORRIBLE just HORRIBLE.
No, the Quran is Muhammad's attempt to make up his own Old Testament. He wasn't about to get on board with the law of the Jews or Christians of idol worshipers he met, or anybody else's laws either. Muhammad was of the "my way or the highway" (or rather the graveyard) philosophy. So he just wrote up his own rules and stuffed them down the throat of as many people as he could.
SPOKEN LIKE A TRUE DIRTY BASTARD MUSSLUM LOLLLLL ROT IN HELL ALL OF YOU
A few thoughts from a reasonable man; Let sleeping dogs lie. Burning one or a thousand will not bring fellow firefighters and police back from the grave. Perhaps the Gainesville Fire Chief can revoke the permit to burn these books (most states require open burning permits). If another disaster happens because of this stupid protest I'll bet the pastor will forget about messages from God while he prays and only figure out another way to provoke these bad people muslim or not. Perhaps the pastor could read this and figure out I might be a fire chief but I could be delivering a devine message. An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth just leaves us with a bunch of blind gumbies! For God's sake think about what you are planning to do Pastor!
Fine, but the terrorist dogs aren't sleeping. They're on the hunt.
They've already been denied a burning permit, they intend to do it anyway.
Please, stop publicize this lunatic and get rid of him...He is returded.
'"Returded"? LOL
I agree that it should be the building where these idiots come together to "worship" that should be burned. This country was founded on religious freedom, but unfortunately there are always a few leaders (zealots) and sheep (followers that don't have the ability to think for themselves) who make a bad name for any religion. The pastor probably bought his credentials on-line, has no clue about the world and is getting a great thrill of all the publicity he is getting. He is obviously not a religious leader, he is a hate monger who has probably never read the Koran, and should be struck down by the God he pretends to support. I was raised a Christian, but will burn the 15 to 20 bibles I own if this idiot and his idiot followers go through with this. Please join me.
You think that church should be burned ? Then do you also think that the mosques where muslims gather to call for people to be murdered and to plot terrorist attacks should also be burned? Tell us yes or no.
Don't disrespect your religion? Then give us something to respect. Muhammad himself was little more than a thug who killed or had killed anyone who wouldn't knuckle under. And his followers still do the same. So what if he said Allah told him to do it and wrote up a bunch of half baked laws. He wanted power and he did whatever it took to get it.
LOL uneducated Americans are becoming the downfall of this wonderful country! I refuse to bow down to people who represent a religion who has killed not only their own people but have brought their insanity to a country founded on Christianity. This culture has despised America and our freedoms for a long time, and have no problen voicing their opinion about it! So to all the pansy asses out there condoning Islam and their ways, I suggest you grow some balls and fight for your country and your rights! If not, there are plenty of airports, with plenty of flights, that will take you into the thick of the Muslim culture. I dare you!
If the tables were turned and it was a story about a group of radical muslims burning bibles I can guarantee there would NOT be half the press coverage this story is receiving. These evil bastards can murder thousands of my countrymen in suicide attacks, saw innocent people's heads off with swords, burn our flags and oppress their own people in ways it's hard for the average person to understand, and now we're questioning this man's right to express his beliefs...in a book burning? What the hell has happened to this country? Burn away, and whatever doesn't make it to the pit can be used in the men's room for TP.
Amen to that, its time the US and Canada stand up, throw these ingrates back to the hells from which they came from. Enough is enough Musslims, time to take those dirty sheets of your heads, as for those men.... pj's are meant for wearing in bed!!!!! Im sick and tired of feeling unwanted in my own country.. wake up everyone, take your heads out of the sand these people (if I can call them that) no I think the word Savages is more fitting, all they want is to take over thus their mass production... ask yourselves where will we be in 15yrs?
Like i was saying with all people there are good and there are bad. Imma burn every Christian Bible i see now. because there are bad christians and good. SO why not disrespect them all and burn all there bibles and make a day out of it and have a BBQ. This is so wrong and im not even religious im atheist. it's just the moral of this is wrong. why instagate something? like i said i hope that church burns.
Please do not do this. I have family serving in Afghanistan and do not want them hurt or killed. Burning a Koran will serve no purpose and will not do anything good. Please for our soldiers lives, reconsider your choice. Make a stand, speak out, but do not do something that you know will cost more lives. Do you not have family, friends or anyone over there that you want to make it home safely? Thank you for listening.
this is a hate crime i hope he get's arrested or a bullet in between the eye's, Your going to instagate something, Hurt our fellow Men serving.
You're an idiot. And an uneducated one at that. Go back to school and learn how to spell and while you're there, brush up on your American history...especially the part that gives retards like you the freedom to post your aforementioned comments.
this is a hate crime? are u serious? next time you come across a pj wearing piece of shit musslim,,, look at the way he looks at you..... then talk to me about hate... you stupid blind ignorant iddiot

Is "book burning" christian. Let's find out, shall we?
Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. ACTS 19:19
Apparently, it is.
They burn our flag........We burn their book
That's right! eye for an eye! Where did all of this submissive behavior come from? They have killed thousands of Americans and plan on killing more as we speak! Be aware they are living amongst us. Stand up people!
Finally, we really do have to wake up. Both Canada and the United states have oppened up our borders.... It s time to close them tight. These are not the Immigrants of yesterday that had a dream, that wern t affraid of hard work, that came to these fine and free countries to work and live and contribute. These are savages that are here to rape our systems, mass produce and kill us all.....
So you are a :Christian" Church. No way! You better not burn the Muslin Holy Book. What if soomeone took all your pew Bibles and performed the same act? How would you feel then? You are absolutely crazy. If you perform this heinous act, you can be assured your church will be set on fire or bombed, perhaops when it is full of congregants. Cease this nonsense and repent of this sin immediately. Return to preaching the Gospel. I have never in my life heard of any act so stupid. You have no right to say all Muslims are going to Hell. You will find yourself with them; you have no authority to make this determination. Only God does. Let him be Lord! Peace...
Well put :)
On April 18, 2010, members of the church participated in a joint protest with the Westboro Baptist Church against homosexuality[17]; the protest took place in front of Trinity United Methodist Church and the University of Florida Hillel.
Later, on April 21, Dove World member Fran Ingram published a blog post proclaiming the church's endorsements of the Westboro Baptist Church's protests against homosexuality and homosexuals[18].
As much as I didn’t want to give Rev. Terry Jones and his wacky church (the Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida) the pleasure of getting one more website hit, I felt it was the lesser of evils to look it over to get some idea about what is fueling this group’s fanatical hatred for Islam.
I didn’t have to look very far! It became immediately apparent why these so-called believers in Jesus are so out of tune with the real Man From Galilee who is known for saying things like “love your enemies” and “do unto others as you would have them do to you”–their website is littered with the belief that God is going to send a lot of people to a burning Hell!
However, what is even more bizarre, is to read Rev. Jones try to make such an issue of their supposed belief that Jesus is the son of God, and not just a prophet as Islam holds. If, in fact, he really thought Jesus was the actual incarnation of God, the first thing he would know is that God doesn’t hate anyone, has no intention of ever hurting anyone (much less blow torching them!) or returning anything except love for hate. Jesus not only taught these things, but he lived them out. If he really is The Word or The Expression of God, because he was God in the flesh, then The Message of Jesus is that we ought to treat everyone in the world, including Muslims, the same way we would like to be treated.
In other words, even if every one of Rev Jones’ exaggerated claims about how “evil” Islam is were true, were he a real believer in Jesus, he would never disrespect them in the manner he and his church still threaten to do.
All that said, I will give Jones credit for one thing–his Hellish logic, twisted as it is, is consistent! Think about it. If God were actually intending to torture every Muslim (along with everyone else who is not a Christian by Jones’ definition), with fire, for eternity, then doing to the Koran what God is supposedly going to do those who believe in it isn’t that much of a stretch! So I’m not all that baffled by Rev. Jones’ plans for Sept. 11th, given what he thinks God is like.
What is very baffling, though, is how so many other Evangelicals who also believe God is going to subject billions of people to an eternal Abu Ghahib know, somewhere deep down, that Rev. Jones is wrong! As well as they should!
Perhaps, in spite of all the Pro Hell propaganda they are fed all the time, it’s still not so easy to fully accept the notion that Jesus will one day make every terrorist act committed in all of human history pale in comparison to what he will do. Why? Well, I’d like to believe that it’s because, once you’ve heard even a distorted part of the Good News, it has a powerful effect on the soul.
Let me illustrate from just one of the many accounts of Jesus’ words and actions in the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 9, when his disciples actually wanted God to rain fire down from Heaven on a village of Samaritans (a people whose religious beliefs closely mirror today’s Islam) because they had rejected him. Jesus’ response was visceral! He told them that their words were inspired by Satan, and he lamented their lack of understanding about his real mission. Imagine what Jesus would say to the believers of today who not only claim God is going to burn people for a few horrific minutes until they’re dead, but forever!
This is why I wrote my book, Hell? No! Why You Can Be Certain There Is No Such Place As Hell (available at www.thereisnohell.com). I realized that there are a lot of believers out there who need help to rid themselves of a belief that they, in their heart of hearts, know just can’t be true. But it’s really hard for them to escape the tentacles of fear that it might just be true. Fortunately, those who have done all they can to pervert the real message of Jesus have as yet to erase it completely. It’s my hope that, by pointing people to what he actually said and did, they will be liberated once and for all from Hell’s grasp and all the other crazy ideas that go with it, such as burning Korans.
YOU ARE A REAL WIND BAG,,,,, Look around you stupid, these musslims are the haters, they leave us no choice!!!!!!
Why should it matter if the Koran is burned? Does that change a religion. Let it be burned so that dumb moslems can realize that religion is in hearts and not in books. Nobody can take that away. If not, buddhists would have lost their religion when they chose to blow up those ancient statues in Afghanistan. Burn pastor ... burn.
Hey, get over it. You guys (Muslims) constantly destroy the holy books, artifacts and places of worship of other religions. Not to mention the violence perpetrated on the believers of other faiths.
So it looks like the Koran and its followers cannot withstand one human with fire.
Oh and by the way, Christians consider the Holy Bible to be the word of God.
Well, frankly, if the world won't survive because a guy burned some books, then let it all go to heck. The Muslims sacked the Library at Alexandria Egypt and burned every last book, so we don't even have an accurate record of civilization.
A bunch of Irish Monks had to run off to Iona and try to copy the Bible by hand, and that was a muck up. Everything got lost in the translations.
I say, never let a good campfire go to waste. Get some marshmallows and hot dogs while you're at it.
