Texas Roller Derby brings short skirts and skates to the Palmer Events Center

This past Saturday the Palmer Events Center welcomed the eclectic fans and skaters of roller derby once again, this time presenting the Holy Rollers against the Hellcats.  It was an exciting game this Saturday, when three-time champions the Holy Rollers lost to the up-and-coming Hellcats. Each team fought to the bitter end as the game closed with a score of 33 to 29, the Hellcats keeping the lead throughout the match and the Holy Rollers making a defiant, yet unfortunate return in the second half.  Not only was the event exciting for the athletic competition, but the game brings a quirky sense of fun with team costumes and the penalty wheel.

The Holy Roller girls, following their clever team name, donned Catholic school girl outfits and, as they were introduced, had a transvestite-pleather bound nun bless them with a spanking. The Hellcats, in the same fashion as their name, wore pink cat-like tights and skirts and stormed into the roller rink as a fast-moving team, having each member wave as their name was called. Loyal derby fans filled the auditorium and matched the spirit of their teams, wearing costumes that matched their teams’ theme.

The event began with an instructive demonstration of derby rules, making it easy for newcomers to follow the action. One of the most unique features of roller derby is the penalty wheel that determines the seemingly childish, yet challenging task the teams will complete when there is a penalty on either team. The tasks included tug of war, arm wrestling, pillow fights, etc., that would intuitively be fairly innocent, but one would find that roller derby girls up the ante with their determined aggression. The applause of the fans truly assigned the winner of the penalty round. A fan favorite of the penalty tasks was the “No Holds Barred, Two Lap Duel,” which had a member of each team race until they completed two laps around the rink, allowing them to do anything to each other. The stand out player of the Hellcats was Bloody Mishka, a rookie jammer, helped her team keep the lead with her consistent points.

Overall, the event was a fun-filled attraction that contained athletic appeal, eccentric costumes, a full bar, concessions, and merch stands, yet another great time in the weird city of Austin.
