George Washington Webquest
The objective of this webquest is to learn about our first president, George Washington. What will you do? You will find the answers to questions and complete activities through the use of the internet sites that are given to you.
Materials you will need: paper, pencil, printer, colored pencils
Step #1: Go http://www.eduplace.com/ss/maps/pdf/us_nl.pdf and print out the U.S. map.
Step #2: Go to: http://www.whitehouse.gov/about/presidents/georgewashington Find out where George Washington was born and color and label the U.S. map showing your answer.
Step #3: Go to: http://www.apples4theteacher.com/holidays/presidents-day/george-washington/timeline.html Find and record what is important (about Washington's life) for each of the following years:
- 1732

- 1759
- 1774
- 1775
- 1776
- 1787
- 1789
- 1793
- 1799
Now, looking at the same website, answer the following questions:
- What was Washington's first job?
- How old was he when he began his first job?
- Before the Revolutionary war, Washington commanded troops in what war?
- During Washington's presidency, what states were formed?
Go back to the website in Step #2. Who did Washington marry?
Step #4: Go to http://www.whitehouse.gov/about/first-ladies/marthawashington and find Mrs. Washington's complete name and write it down. Now, read the passage about her and list at least
three facts about her that you find interesting.
Step #5: Go to http://www.georgewashington.si.edu/exhibition/georgeby2.html There you will find three separate sections of interactive media, (The Revolutionary War, The Presidencey, Life at Mt. Vernon.) Choose one. Listen to all segments under the section that you choose. Take notes about each, (What did you learn? What did you find most interesting?)
Step #6: Go to http://www.americaslibrary.gov/aa/wash/aa_wash_subj.html There you will find a section that reads "More stories about George Washington." Once again, choose one and click on it. Read the information that you find, clicking on the arrows, reading each page. Again, take notes about what you find important or interesting about George's life.
This section of the webquest is complete. Now it is time for you to take all of the information that you've gathered and create a project of your choice to share with others. The project should show what you have learned about Washington's life.
Types of projects you can consider:
- Create a poster/display
- Create a Powerpoint
- Write/Illustrate a short book
- Write a play about Washington's life
There are other things you can do, but the above examples should give you an idea of how you can share your learning with others.
