Part One: An interview with Trishann Couvillion of Fire Eyes Photography is part of an ongoing series called Spotlight on Home-Based Business Owners: Lessons from Entrepreneurs. The Seattle Home-based Business Examiner seeks to provide you with a variety of lessons learned from a range of business owners that will benefit any reader seeking information about starting or growing a home-based business in the Seattle area or elsewhere in the United States.

Trishann Couvillion is the owner of Fire Eyes Photography based in Seattle, WA. She grew up in the Seattle area and attended Academy of Art University in San Francisco. After living in the Bay Area for twelve years and obtaining a degree in photojournalism, she started Fire Eyes Photography and relocated to Seattle. She travels worldwide for her clients and continues to work in the San Francisco region as well.

Couvillion finds inspiration in settings where she can observe people in natural interaction. She especially enjoys photographing weddings and corporate events. She uses an unobtrusive style, which allows for images that are full of life and wonderful energy, and captures the essence of people and special moments.

In her final year of art school, she was required to photograph something for her thesis project. She chose a blues club down the street from her art school in San Francisco called Biscuits and Blues. Her photographic documentary on blues music has led her to cities across the country known for their vibrant blues scene. She is currently working to publish a book about her photographic documentary on blues music.

Couvillion is also a teacher. She teaches workshops and also shares video tutorials and assignments on the Fire Eyes Photography Facebook Fan Page. Through these assignments, she offers budding photographers feedback on their work. If someone is interested in learning more about photography, whether for business or as a serious hobby, she recommends that you hone in on the craft and develop your skills. Taking classes at a community college are affordable and allow for use of the school's camera equipment as well as the dark room for film development. It is important to learn the technical side of photography, which includes using your equipment as well as computer-related software for editing and publishing your work. It is also equally important to learn how to work with diverse groups of people. "To improve your business skills and find help in growing your business," Couvillion says, "I highly recommend working with the Small Business Administration (SBA)." The SBA offers business coaching services and workshops that can help a new small business get up and running.

When working on ideas to grow her business, Couvillion says, "I work best when I can bounce ideas off somebody. Being in business for yourself can cause isolation if you do not actively network with others." Maintaining her connections with various groups and organizations in Seattle and San Francisco and attending social and professional events (including Ladies Who Launch) helps her with continued personal development and business growth.
