FSC cigarettes even more dangerous?
After lighting up are you experiencing more headaches, stomach cramps or a coppery taste in your mouth? Does your new FSC (fire-safe cigarette) taste bad, cause dry mouth and are you coughing more?
New York State was one of the first states to require that cigarettes be made with the new fire-safe paper. This paper is constructed by gluing two or three thin bands of less-porous paper together with an ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer emulsion based adhesive (carpet glue).
These papers have bands (see image) that act as speed bumps, so if the cigarette is left unattended it will self-extinguish. The coalitions that passed these laws believe that these cigarettes would limit the number of cigarette fire deaths.
Though this law was passed in 2004, the number of deaths caused by fires from cigarettes hasn’t been greatly reduced, but complaints from smokers all over the U.S have multiplied.
Symptoms include:
Nausea, sores in mouth and throat, dry throat, constant headaches, extreme coughing, tightness in the chest, vomiting, body aches, pain in the abdomen and respiratory conditions including asthma and bronchitis.
The firesafecigarette.org website mentions a study by the Harvard School of Public Health:
“The report states, "The majority of smoke toxic compounds (14) tested were not different between New York and Massachusetts brands. Five compounds were slightly higher in New York brands. There is no evidence that these increases affect the already highly toxic nature of cigarette smoke." The research found the majority of toxic compounds were no different between the smoke of the New York and Massachusetts brands that were tested. Five compounds were slightly higher, but no evidence exists that the small increases affect the already highly toxic nature of cigarette smoke.”
Essentially, what they are saying is that since cigarettes are already toxic, let’s make them more toxic.
The real numbers from the study are:
“The Harvard School of Health reported that when comparing NY Cigarettes (FSC) versus Regular Cigarettes, the FSC cigarettes produced 13.9% more Naphthalene and 11.4% more carbon monoxide than regular cigarettes. Naphthalene is commonly found in moth balls, and exposure in high amounts can result in headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, malaise, confusion, anemia, jaundice, convulsions, and coma. Therefore, it has been proven that FSC cigarettes contain higher levels of chemicals that are harmful to smokers.”
You can identify these packs of cigarettes by the FSC above the barcode. For now, over 30 states have enacted this law and soon the entire country.
Some smokers have opted to RYO (roll your own) or MYO (make your own) by purchasing rolling tobacco, cigarettes tubes with the filter attached and inexpensive injection machines. Most of these smokers mention that after switching to rolled cigarettes; the symptoms subsided after a few days.
The question is, when and if, the FSC laws will be applied to rolling papers as well.
These "speed bumps" on the cigarette paper can be easily identified (darker color) if you hold the paper up to the light.
Though tobacco was used as a medicinal and ceremonial plant among many indigenous tribes around the world and maybe should have remained a plant for special occasions, devotion and healing, its present day over-use and abuse has spurned the Dark Ages for this very sacred plant.
Now, carpet glue has been added to the mix. On the plus side, it has made smokers return to the more ceremonial use of tobacco; it takes time, effort and attention to roll a cigarette, even when using a special rolling machine. The Spirit of Tobacco may not have been pleased with our present day indulgence and inattention. It takes a carpet glue scare to guide us back to a more sober use.

A friend and I were talking about cigs last night and she mentioned that since they switched to FSC she has had a terrible cough... well so have I!!! I thought ohhh maybe im just smoking too much. My grandma even said I should go to doctor be tested for TB that my cough was so bad... been bad for almost 2 years. Yes, I should quit...however, Im just noting I ddnt have a cough like I do now.

Nice summary. I fear that the FDA will turn a blind eye to this citing the fact that cigarettes already cause cancer so more carcinogens don't matter. I'm surprised at the amount of people that simply had no idea of the change. I caught the metal taste right away.

Mahaps; I am not kidding, (it's funny how offtimes when talking about gov sillyness I have to put in that disclamer.) There is a crack down going on on the canadian border on the smuggling of toilets. They have the old high volume flush units for sale in canada and there are people buying them and smuggling them into the states! ;)
My husband started to become very tired about a month ago, then more symptoms, constant headache, sore throat, tight chest feeling, lungs hurting, coughing harder, nausea, a feeling of something just isn't right. Well he was about to go to the er, I was terrified of stoke or worse. Well a friend asked me to look at the pack and check to see if by the bar code it said FSC, it did. I called him asap and told him about all the horrible things I found online about the new fsc's. 3 days later he is doing 80% better. Only a scratchy throat remains but I'm sure in a few more that will be better too. I cannot believe the government would try to harm or even kill like this. I am out of words to describe the feelings I now have for our leaders, other than cussing. They should of LOUDLY said something. And were is the news on this? I would think they would be all over it. At least some of us online are trying to get the word out. Thank you for the time you took to inform us!

It's pretty easy to roll your own with Rizla machine and you can buy ready-made tubes (at least for the time being they don't have FSC). If you sit down for five minutes in the morning, you can make a pack of cigarettes and put them in a case. The cigarette tubes have a filter attached and you just slide the machine. It's easy. I've found the Bali Shag blend soothing (light).
if the amount of deaths from home fires hasn't decreased from having fsc than what the hell is the point? If ppl want to smoke they will doesn't matter what you do to cigarettes. All fsc really does is make life worse for ppl
I had an allergic reaction to these fsc cigs I broke out in the hives from head to toe, my hands started swelling, and was having heartburn like symptoms. I have been smoking for years, but as I was eliminating things that could cause this allergic reaction and got to the cigs. it was not hard at all for me to lay them down, the glue and chemicals they are putting in these cigs. are so harmful I do not want any part of it. I hope every smoker becomes aware of the dangers in these cigs.

They are more dangerous than before. Calling them fire safe is a huge mistake. These cigarettes are much worse on my lungs and health. They taste horrible. Now I am not only much poorer due to such huge tax hikes, but I am unable to enjoy my freedom of choice. They certainly succeeded in making smoking a much larger burden. This change makes me FURIOUS and I will do anything to buy Non FSC's and will fight this all the way.
My brother has had these cigarettes ignite into flames when drawing on them near the end. He has burned his face/nose twice. If anyone else has had similiar experience, please share them.
after reading what others had to say I now know I am not alone. I want to stop smoking but have tried and give up. I feel like a lab rat and know big tobacco companies spend a lot of money to keep me hooked. Now we have fire safety killing us too! Wish I could make them pay!

Eugenics. They want 1 billion smokers dead by 2010. If you smoke it, it will rapidly kill you. This is one of the New World Order's ENDGAME. They are highly addictive. NEW CHEMICALS are in the tobacco, not just the new papers and higher levels of glue.
Only option, my friends, is roll your own, use zigzag papers, cut off 2/3 of the glue, no fiberglass filters, only cotton like Camel filters, and natural, untreated tobacco.
I have written to my local government, the FDA, the CDC and to the organization, the National Fire Protection Association regarding my concerns about these toxic cigarettes. This is the only way to make a change. Keep voicing your complaints, write everyone you can think of to voice you concerns and your dissatisfaction. Our voices must be heard. They can't continue to poisen smokers, just because they feel like it. Smokers are American Citizens and we are NOT second class citizens. We have to make our voices be heard and order to make a change. Start sending emails!!!!!
Our Government could care less about the health problems we are having with these toxic FSC's. I really fear that nothing will be done by the FDA to get these banned, and the petition to get the law repealed is probably not going to do a bit of good. What needs to happen is: we need to take a stand and boycot their disgusting cigarettes or start protesting them in the freakin streets!
Well, they are now showing up in Virginia...These FSC cigs suck and DO cause health problems beyond the traditional ones attributed to tobacco consumption. I just wonder how things are going to be paid for when so many people quit smoking that they no longer get enough from the taxes on tobacco. Be afraid....Be very afraid.

I am a responsible adult, and I enjoy about a pack a week at work. I recently bought a pack of fire-safes and they taste awful, gave me a headache, and a sore throat. Thank you worthless legislators for taking away yet another pleasure that I have.
Smoking is not what it was decades ago. This is probably the only unregulated industry of this size in the world. They can put any chemical they like in them and the government is powerless or unwilling (both?) to stop them. They make far too much in taxes to do that, even though they would save even more in health care costs if they banned them in their current form. I can't understand people that smoke today knowing that they put over 1000 chemicals in each cigarette including arsenic, rocket fuel, DDT and ammonia among others.
I say we file some sort of law suit, that is the only way to get the tobacco companies to start fighting this again. The tobacco companies fought FSC for decades and won, but gave up!! Someone needs to do something NOW! I feel like we will see a commercial on TV soon that says..."Have you been sick from FSC, if so call the law offices of..." Is that what is going to have to happen???? Whoever let these laws go through and pushed for them are probably killing people with FSC and don't even know it. Fire Safe?? I was smoking one night and the whole end of the FSC feel off and ruined my NEW couch...that is not firesafe PEOPLE! I also had burn marks all over my arms where the fire feel off on ME! I go to TN now to get mine, but after they go to FSC I guess I will just roll my own. I won't contribute money to any company that does not fight this....these things are dangerous and should be against the law.

They are in each other's pockets so far its not even funny. They are in Tennessee now. I bought some Winstons last week and thought it was a "bad" carton. I called RJR and they knew all about it. The "coalition" has been trying to get this through congress for years but couldn't so they went state by state in a very short time. It's really amazing they could get this passed in 49 states in just a couple of years. They must have a lot of political power. All Winstons and Camels made are now FSC, by mid November all Marlboro's will be FSC. Sign the petition, get active and roll your own!

I have contacted a few of the senators from WV...the FSC bill goes into effect 1/1/10...but Phillip Morris has already started shipping the FSC cigarettes to WV. I was told by two WV senators that there has been no complaints about the cigarettes...but as I continue to research I find over 11,000 complaints...I also found out that the tobacco companies lobbied for this bill to be passed....the WV senate passed this bill without doing any research at all...they just took the word of the tobacco companies that this was safe...I know several people that have burns on their hands, clothing, and carpets...I keep making calls to the state fire marshall and to my senators...I am trying to show them just how dangerous these FSC cigarettes are and hopefully get these cigarettes out of WV...then maybe other states will follow. The FSC cigarettes are a fire hazard...I smoke Marlboro Menthol...the FSC cigarettes start to go out then they catch on fire...I have burns on my carpet, on my car upholstery, my furniture, and my skin...these cigarettes are supposed to prevent fires not start them...GET THEM OFF THE MARKET BEFORE MANY PEOPLE DIE! Now to the second part of my complaint...I am appalled that the WV senate passed this bill! They didn't do any research on the FSC cigarettes. They are making people sick! I had a friend that was rushed to the emergency room a couple days ago because of chest pains and shortness of breath..when I had him to tell me if FSC was over the barcode on his pack of cigarettes...IT WAS...he threw them away and bought a pack of regular cigarettes...he is fine...his girlfriend has switched back also and her headaches have stopped...my mother has been sick for quite awhile...her doctor has runned several tests on her and found nothing...she switched to regular cigarettes and is fine now!
I could not understand why I was coughing, waking up with severe abdominal pain, extremely dry mouth, and cigarettes that tasted shabongbong. I thought I was getting the swine flu! I have smoked for 23 years .. and I guess this is what I needed to quit. I am disgusted enought by the fact that there are so many chemicals in cigarettes ... however, I enjoy them. i live in ohio... i have had increased headaches and abdominal pain as well after smoking the fsc cigarettes (i smoke marlboro menth lts). how is it the fda will let phillip morris get away with putting carpet glue and some chemical found in moth balls in cigarettes? also.. the article said that when they burn the release even more toxic chemicals? so its not just harming smokers.. its harming nonsmokers as well. how can the government do this?!? just doesnt make any sense to me!!
I have been getting dizzy,lightheaded,bloody nose bleeds,hot flashes, and feeling like I am ready to pass out from the fsc cigs.
This is just awful, causing alot of people to get sick and it's not fair to the public not to warn them ahead of time before doing it. It's mean and unjust for our governenment to allow something like this to take place. I still find non-FSC cigarette but they will run out soon here in Ohio I've smoking for 14 years and never smoke worse cigarettes and I notice when somoking FSC cigarette start coghing never cough before fill metelic taste in my mouth and fill like drunk sensation.
ya know what. I will now just go old school and smoke a pipe with tabacco.go back to the root of it all!!!
