As part of Recovery Summer, tomorrow Vice President Joe Biden will visit Grand Canyon National Park where the Recovery Act is funding construction and maintenance projects. Hikers could hike early in the cool morning hours to Hopi Point and then listen to Biden's comments at 10:30 a.m.  Grand Canyon National Park is a favorite of Phoenix-area hikers.

The Vice President will speak at Hopi Point on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona on Tuesday, July 27, at 10:30 AM MST. Hopi Point is located on the Rim Trail west of the Grand Canyon Village. It may be accessed by foot, or by shuttle bus. Bring water, toliets are available at Hopi Point, but not water. The Vice President will be joined by Director of the National Park Service Jonathan Jarvis.

More than 1,000 workers have been part of seventeen Recovery Act projects at Grand Canyon and Yellowstone National Parks. Overall, 800 Recovery Act projects are underway at National Parks across the country this summer – eight times as many as last summer.

Hopi Point’s fenced viewing area next to the road offers a vista over the canyon floor located almost one mile below.

South Rim Recovery Act projects
A contract for approximately $4.5 million was awarded to Fann Contracting of Prescott, Arizona for work on the South Rim that includes micro (sealing process that extends the life of a road) and chip seal on main roadways, campgrounds, residential areas, parking lots (excluding newly-constructed parking lots at Grand Canyon Visitor Center), and other adjacent paved areas.

North Rim Recovery Act projects

A contract for approximately $1.5 million was awarded to Intermountain Slurry Seal from Salt Lake City, Utah for work on the North Rim that includes micro/chip seal on main roadways, parking lots, campground, residential areas and other adjacent paved areas.
