Ready for a break from Minnesota before the weather hits for another long winter? Head to Maine for sunny skies, clear coastal water and the freshest seafood you'll ever taste this side of nowhere. On a recent trip to Stonington, Maine on Deer Isle, we found the ten best places to eat and shop.
Number two is Dockside Books and Gifts. This little gem is almost hidden away in a small alley leading to the water, just off Main Street. You might not be sure the shop is really a store, really open, or even large enough to accommodate more than one or two people. Don't worry, it's bigger on the inside.
This is the place for books by and about local authors, like Linda Greenlaw, the sea captain featured in the book, and movie, The Perfect Storm, and Joe Coomer, author of The Loop, which makes for an easy beach read. Stop by the library in town and sign out a copy. If you are staying at Boyce's Motel, you can check out a book with a signature.
Before you leave Dockside Books & Gifts, pick up a few gifts for the folks back home, like the gorgeous postcards based on local watercolor artist Patricia Avidson's work, or notecards featuring Anne Kilham's famous Maine watercolor designs, and delicate ornaments carved into replicas of lobster buoys or made from fishing knots (more beautiful and intricate than you might think.)
When you've worked up an appetite, try Lily's Cafe for lunch, or The Whale's Rib for dinner.
