Ready for a break from Minnesota before the weather hits for another long winter? Head to the islands of Maine for sunny skies, clear coastal water and the freshest seafood you'll ever taste this side of anywhere.

On a recent trip to Stonington, on Deer Island, Maine we found the ten best places to eat and shop. Number Ten is Boyce's Motel. Why mention a motel in a food article? Simple, it's the best place for lobster in town!

The locals rarely eat lobster out, they just pull them out of the water offshore and cook them at home, of course. Luckily for you, if you are staying at  Boyce's' Motel, the innkeeper, Barrett Gray might just hook you up with some lobster so fresh they haven't realized they've been caught, steam 'em up, and even bring them to your room. Unless of course you would rather stroll down the road a spell and buy them from the Lobster Co-op.

Now, most of the rooms at Boyce's have fully stocked kitchens, and Barrett has been known to let folks use his grill. The Harbor View Store (attached to the Fisherman's Friend Restaurant) also sells lobster straight out of a tank next to the cash register for about a third of what us Minnesotans pay for frozen tails. Like everyone in this sleepy little town, the help is friendly - the cashier calls everyone "Love," as in "Find everything you need, Love?"

If you are looking for lobster served (at last count) 30 different ways and some of the friendliest service in town, head down the block to The Fisherman's Friend. Eat in or sit outside on the large deck right on the water's edge. It's also one of the few places with a bar in town, but that doesn't mean it's open past 9 p.m. This is a real fishing village and the locals need to get up and start hauling traps in by about three or four a.m.

Now if friendly service is not as important as a good deal, try the Harbor Café, two doors up from Boyce's Motel. Pick up a twin lobster dinner for half of what you'll pay anywhere else in town. If the staff forgets to take your order or barks out seating instructions, don't take it personally. Remember your paying for good, cheap lobster. Get it to go and enjoy the view from the deck waterside at Boyce's.

Best of all, Boyce's Motel is homey, clean, and staffed by a friendly group of folks who seem to have
nothing better to do all day than make sure you are feeling pampered and relaxed. Book your reservations early. It's a popular destination for vacation regulars.
