Ready for a break from Minnesota before the weather hits for another long winter? Head to Maine for sunny skies, clear coastal water and the freshest seafood you'll ever taste this side of nowhere. On a recent trip to Stonington, Maine on Deer Isle, we found the top ten best places to eat and shop.
Number eight is Nervous Nellie's Jams and Jellies (chutney and marmalade.) The jams really are made in a tiny, white, clapboard jelly kitchen by hand, with flavors ranging from Wild Maine Preserves, Blackberry Peach Conserve, Hot Tomato Chutney, Strawberry Rhubarb Conserve, and a personal favorite, the Maine Blue Razz Conserve.
You can try the insanely delicious, home-made creations while eating home-made biscuits at Susie Q's up the hill in the former Fisherman's Friend building (don't miss Susie's famous blueberry pancakes), but also make sure you swing by Nellie's in person. It's a short drive around Deer Island to reach Sunshine Road. Make a left and go three miles. You can't miss it, or you shouldn't.
Nellie's is open year round, but during May through October they serve fresh, hot scones thick with jam, as well as coffee and tea, or juice. Sit on the deck and enjoy the scents of the apple orchard, and raspberry and blueberry nectar float on the ocean breeze.
