I'm embarrassed to live in Spokane when read this article. At least I can proudly say I was part of the 39.74% of Spokanites.
If it was ever a time for this to happen, it is now! Split this State down the middle and rid ourselves of this division. If you don't know what the State of Lincoln is, i urge you to look it up and see what we are missing. If you think that it can't be done the U.S. Constitution Article 4 Section 3 says this - New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new State shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or Parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress.
read that twice, it states that no new state can be formed "WITHOUT the CONSENT", meaning that if both state and the congress would agree, it could happen. For too long have these people stopped us from having the State we want without fighting for it almost every time. please join the movement. thank you
I still don't know how anyone can vote against this bill in good conscious. I've yet to hear a logical argument against gay marriage or equal rights for gay partners. I keep asking people (especially married people), how does a gay couple having access to equal benefits affect your marriage personally at all???????? I've yet to hear a logical answer. Sanctity of marriage? Give me a break. Just look at the divorce rate for straight couples. The usual "logical" explanation is they are intolerant, homophobic conservatives that have been brainwashed by a church that thinks it's more important to impose their religious views than to worship and help others....
As a resident of Spokane and someone who loves living in Washington State, I am so embarassed by this referendum. It is unconstitutional to enact legislation that discriminates against minorities. Hopefully it doesn't pass, otherwise it will be overturned in courts.
Sorry, meant to say that hopefully it DOES pass.
It comes to this...asks your parents what they think and why, oh wait a minute if you had only a domistic partnership...you wouldn't have been born. If you disagree, it's time to review your basic biology course. It's a matter of life. If everyone prefer gay/leisban relationship - life would end after 1 generation, how very selfish is that. Husband/wife marriages are certainly not perfect and problems are present throughout, but we work on them....we don't abandon those values that promote life, community, and continuation of living for all simply because our own selfish and limiting desires.
Thanks for the update!

Bob, your argument is strange and further highlights what was said below about there being NO viable argument against equal rights. Do you really think that ONLY MARRIED PEOPLE have kids? Maybe you should devote your energy to saving the planet so our kids (gay and straight) continue to have a place to live. Without a planet this narrow minded issue doesn't matter.
"They came first for the Christians, and I did nothing because I am not a Christian. Then they came for the Blacks, and I did nothing because I am not a Black. Then they came for the women, and I did nothing because I am not a woman. When they finally came for me, there was no one left to do anything.
People need to realize that this is not an issue about religion or whatever (Though I AM a Christian. Real Christians aren't bigots.) I don't care how people align. Gay, straight(asexual for crying out loud!). You don't have to like or agree with who you are fighting for. Any issue of civil rights is a world issue. Don't think it applies to you? Wait until the world moves and suddenly you're the minority.
Oh, and a side note about if everyone was gay or lesbian? That's why everyone isn't gay, honey. About 10%. Read YOUR biology. It's in nearly every species of animal. It's natural population control.
And fyi? The gays are having children. Now they want to protect them.

I am absolutely stunned what is going on in our country!!! What a shame!! What would our forefathers say if they even saw this going on! Marriage is one man and one woman only from the beginning to the end! Any cultures that perverted this law simply degraded from the face of the earth! Would you, people, who is against this law listen to your sound mind and logic???
Bob - You may want to catch up with the 21st century. Gay & Lesbian Couples have children. It's not rocket science. Straight Couples have been known to infertile...so long generation 1, I guess that is selfish of them to stay together...Give me a break go get educated.
More and more we are becoming an immoral nation. Passing this bill further destroys the family and increases the number of kids in the next generation to accept immorral behavior as the norm. The princples under which this country was founded is disolving from bills like this. We are not building a better nation but making it much worse. I have never seen this nation so morally depraved as i do today. Washington state voters, shame on you.
God destroyed Sodom & Gomorah for homosexuality. It doesn't matter if they have kids or not, they should have stuck to what nature intended one MAN and one WOMAN and they wouldn't be worrying about protecting their kids!
My psychology textbook said that there were no noticeable distinctions between kids raised with same sex parents vs traditional parents except they were more inclined to participate in homosexual behavior. That is no big deal except that is the defining distinction in this case. If homosexuality is genetic, Darwin is calling you out of the gene pool; if it is by choice (like those heterosexual kids in gay homes) then it is not unreasonable to say they are opting out of the protections marriage. If it is genetic, then it is a defect, if it is a choice, then it comes with a consequence. Isn't that what we tell our kids? There are consequences for your actions

Wow. I just don't understand how people in this country, in 2009, can be so ignorant. First of all, this referendum isn't even about gay marriage. It's about benefits. It's health care...so the ridiculous arguments against gay marriage are irrelevant. Second, to those of you concerned about what our founding fathers would say, I believe our founding fathers declared that "all men are created equal"--kind of squashes that argument, huh? Do you really think being gay is new? Finally--to "profamily": being gay is not a choice. I have several gay friends and to my knowledge, all of their parents are straight. Explain that with your textbook. I have news for you--A commited gay couple, with or without kids, is a family. If you are "profamily" why don't you support them? Maybe you should re-think what you stand for, or spend some more time in school growing up a bit.
Who are we to pass judgment on others? This is what kills me about our society. I was raised a very strict Catholic and I've never seen more hypocrisy than with people in church. As an adult I walk in with my children and you should have seen the "good, moral people" of the Catholic church looking down their noses at us and completely snubbing my family.
God is the only JUDGE that matters.
Why are people here so judgmental of committed couples who love each other? THEY LOVE EACH OTHER! In my mind that's all that matters and they should be afforded the same benefits and rights. I'll tell you what's worse: A man and woman that are NOT married, both have children from one or more previous relationships and have a couple from their current relationship. Many of these couples have NO intention of getting married or even fully committing. Tell me what's worse for the kids? Parents jumping from partner to partner or being raised in a committed loving relationship?
Actually, the reason people are voting against gay marriage is because that would devistate our country. We would no longer be able to teach our children that being homosexual is a sin! It would become a crime a think that way. To each his own, but to force that upon others is unacceptable. They will change school books to show same sex parents to our children.
There was no vote on gay marriage in Washington State, and it shows how uninformed some voters in this state really are. It's quite sad.
What ever...referendum 71 is gateway law for passing gay marriage in the future. As it is now homosexuals have just as many rights as others, they just can't marry. If this law is passed our nation is doomed. Homosexuals are suger coating referendum 71 to try to get it passed so they can weasle in other horendus laws later on. God created beliefs for a reason! He also created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve! If god had made two of the same sex then we all would not have been born...It takes a man and a woman to recreate...
I don't understand how this remains an argument anymore. There is no legal argument against gay marriage. None whatsoever. NONE! Making gay marriage legal simply allows homosexual couples to have the SAME and EQUAL rights as others. It is UNCONSTITUTIONAL to not allow gay marriage. If we don't allow it then we might as well bring back the 3/5 law and decide women can't vote anymore.
As far as religious arguments go, to be frank, THEY DON'T MATTER and are not legally applicable. Separation of Church and State. On any legal matter (which marriage absolutely is) the church has no say. Be intolerant, be against homosexuality, don't support it. Fine, you have that right. What you do not have the right to do is impose your beliefs on others. It is, in theory, ILLEGAL for a state to ban gay marriage as no state can usurp federal law or the constitution. Gay marriage simply needs to be recognized as legal, anti-gay marriage battles are only distractions from more important problems.
To quote literally confused: "What you do not have the right to do is impose your beliefs on others"
My point exactly! Me being against it has NOTHING to do with hating gays. It has to do with eventually being forced into teaching my children that it is ok to be gay, which is what will happen if we let these kinds of laws pass. It will become illegal to teach our kids that being homosexual is wrong.
So, thank you for sticking your foot in your mouth...and please don't try to impose your belief in homosexual relations on others, it's not right....
