It is no wonder that chef/owner Paul Shoemaker’s Savory Restaurant located at Pt. Dume in Malibu was Zagat’s #1 newcomer in LA. The soothing Zen like atmosphere of Savory mixed with the outstanding libations and culinary treats makes for a perfect Happy Hour. Chef Shoemaker trained at French Laundry and worked at The Water Grill downtown. His focus in his creations is simple, fresh, locally sourced foods and products served in an ambiance of backyard living. This is a prime example of sustainable living at its best.
Manager and PR whiz extraordinaire Sammy Espinoza also tends a mean bar. He made us a trio of his own outstanding cocktail recipes including The Master Cleanse (with Ketel One Citron, fresh lemonade, maple syrup and cayenne pepper rimmed); the Berry Martini (with raspberry and blueberry Stoli, pomegranate juice and fresh berries), and the Spiced Bourbon (Buffalo Trace Bourbon black mission fig infused, nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon and organic apple cider). All of the drinks were fastidiously prepared a served with the right amount of verve and flair!
Sammy next treated us to some of Savory’s best small plates including Sweet Onion Rings in tempura batter, Fish and Chips with cod and Guinness beer batter, Chicken Liver Pate infused with brandy, shallots, nutmeg and butter (Sara’s fav!), Shaved Spitzenberg Apple Salad with Blue Cheese and Candied Walnuts, Black Mission Fig and Prosciutto Salad with pine nuts, burrata, frisee and arugula, Shishito Peppers and Mishitake Mushroom tempura, and a Fennel Sausage Pizza with onions, burrata and tomato. Each and every one of these plates was an absolute delight to be savored well into the night. Paired with these we had white and red wines from Napa Valley, a Chardonnay and Syrah both of which were outstanding and terrific value at the price.
Savory features Pub Night/Football Monday which is quite popular with the locals who linger late. On Thursday nights Savory features Jacqui Hylton doing jazz covers of Etta James and Billie Holiday. Reservations are a must!! Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights Savory has After Hours geared towards a late night crowd with live entertainment, jazz, DJs, etc.
To add to the merriment this year Savory is having a Halloween party that falls on Pub Night – how fun is that! They are also planning a Christmas party and a huge New Years bash! If our Happy Hour experience is any indication for the future, both of these are sure to be big hits!
Savory may be a bit off the beaten path but the next time you are looking for a serene, elegant, restorative Happy Hour in Malibu check this place out! It will not be a hidden gem for long…
