Good news for Rebecca Bross: Further tests have shown that the six-time World medalist only dislocated her kneecap vaulting at the U.S. Championships this past weekend, and that she does not have further damage to ger ACL or meniscus, Bross's agent confirmed to About.com Gymnastics.
Bross also released a statement to the media Wednesday, via USA Gymnastics:
Rebecca Bross will undergo surgery on Aug. 25 to reset and stabilize her right kneecap, which was dislocated on Aug. 20 at the Visa Championships. She is expected to return to gymnastics in two months and to be back to 100 percent in time for the start of the 2012 competitive season. Rebecca extends her thanks and appreciation for the notes and well wishes from fans, friends and family.
The dislocated kneecap was the diagnosis before Bross left the arena, but X-rays and an MRI were neeed to confirm that there was no further damage to her knee. Bross landed her double-twisting Yurchenko low and short of rotation on the final night of competition, then collapsed to the mat grabbing her knee.
It was an unfortunate end to what had been an unfortunate championships for the defending U.S. all-around champion, who hadn't looked like herself in training or in the meet. Hopefully the injury, which should keep Bross from competing again until 2012, will allow her time to heal physically and mentally, and come back even stronger.
