Quick hits: Junior/Senior women's all-around finals at the Canadian Nationals

Rotation oneJuniors on vault/bars, seniors on beam/floor

Warmup notes: Former FIG President Hardy Fink is the chief judge for the men's event, it is announced. That's fitting.

Kristin Klarenbach is not competing tonight, and apparently did not work out yesterday either. She has been replaced by Gabby May in the all-around competition.

Jordyn Pedersen, vault: FTY, hop back, little bit of legs in the air.

Nicole Chow, bars: Stalder, stalder full to Pak, toe shoot toe hecht to high, full turn, double pike. Hit routine!

Talia Chiarelli, beam: Front aerial, bhs, layout, and comes off. Switch side. Sider aerial. Switch, back tuck...roundoff, double pike with a small step back.

Brittany Rogers, floor: Double tuck. 1.5 to double full. Tourjete half. Triple turn, a little off but OK. She'll be happy to get this out of the way, I think...double pike, one foot OOB. Lovely choreo and improved presentation throughout.

Kaitlyn Hofland, vault: Didn't see it.

Sabrina Tomassini, bars: Maloney to high, te stalder to toe fyll to giant to bail legs apart and maight have hit her feet...toe shoot to high, blind, front giant bit of leg form, sat down double front.

Bianca Dancose-Giambattisto, beam: Press mount, nice. Front aerial to side aerial and splits the beam. Side somie. Double turn. Side somie. Gainer layout dismount.

Silvia Colussi-Pelaez, floor: Lovely opening pose. "Carmen". Full in tuck, very good! Punch front to double tuck, a bit low and OOB. Switch to switch half. Double pike to end, a bit low and has to step forward.

Vivi Babalis, vault: Didn't see it.

Hailee Westney, bars: Off on front stalder. Rest of the routine was great -- this is her event. Low landing on double pike dismount.

Shae Zamardi, beam: Punch front, stuck. Very nice. Bhs, back tuck, comes off. Might have fought a bit harder for it. Comes off a second time later in the routine. Roundoff, 1.5 dismount with a hop.

Sabrina Gill, floor: Full in tuck, step back. Unique and interesting choreography that suits Gill's movements. 1.5 to double tuck, steps OOB. Didn't see third pass. Double pike, just a little hop back. Competing like someone who has something to prove after her prelim performance. She looks aggressive.

Maegan Chant, vault: Tsuk layout full, well done, just a hop back.

Brielle Wilchuck, bars: 1.5 twisting dismount. Fought for everything.

Jessica Savona, beam: Punch front. Bhs, layout to two feet, good. Scissone to switch half, very light. Switch to back tuck, little step back. Break on her full turn -- whew! Fought for the side somie. She's OK...Double pike with a very tiny hop. Hit routine for Savona.

Krishna Yemany, floor: Full in tuck, steps forward after landing with chest a bit low...Second pass ended with double tuck, well done. Switch, switch half.

Stefanie Merkle, vault: Didn't see it.

Makinli Handley, bars: Hit routine, I believe.

Sarah Flett, beam: Punch front, small check. Back tuck, a bit off but goes for the back pike anyway and falls. Shoot. Switch side. Front pike, very well done. Switch to wolf, very clean. Roundoff, double tuck from like two steps, nice and high. Too bad about the fall.

Anysia Unick, floor: "Pirates of the Caribbean." Double full to open -- or maybe it was a Rudi. Something easy to protect that ankle. Second pass is front tuck to front tuck half.

Casey Carvalho, vault: Tucked FTY, bit of a stumble step to the side on the landing.

Elise Bolger, bars: Clear hip to toe stalder to toe hecht to high. Tkatchev and misses it. Repeats the skill just fine, full turn, giants to terrific full twisting double tuck dismount with a tiny step. Great height on the dismount. A lot of falls in this first rotation so far...

Coralie Leblond-Chartrand, beam: Press handstand to what I'll call a fish flop, unique. Double turn but came down with leg behind her, so she'll be credited for a 1.5. Front aerial, pause, bhs, layout, good. Side aerial. Side somie. Side somie with legs straight. Switch, wolf. Double full with a step.

Bianca Jordaan, floor: A hard, driving piece of music...Good high full in tuck with a step back. Nice technique on that. 2.5 to punch front, good.

Natalie Vaculik, vault: Yurchenko layout half, well done.

Marisa Dick, bars: Off on Jaeger. Full twist dismount. Nice swing throughout.

Gabby May, beam: Roundoff, layout to two feet mount, makes it. Risky stuff! Bhs, layout, a bit sloppy. Punch front. Switch side, needs to be more even on this skill. Side aerial. Almost comes off on a leap. Scissone, wolf. Some extra prep before her dismount, a roundoff, 1.5.

Taylor Ricci, floor: Triple full to open. Double tuck second pass. A driving beat with her music. 1.5 to front layout full, nice. Switch, switch half. Double pike with a step back. Nice routine for Ricci!

Victoria Moors, vault: Yurchenko 1.5 with a step forward.

Victoria Woo, bars: Jump to high, bail to clear hip to toe hecht to high, full turn, blind, half turn, giants, double layout, very well done.

Dominique Pegg, beam: Jump on. Front aerial, bhs, layout, excellent. Not a wobble. Switch side, very good. Side aerial, good. Punch front, stuck. Good for her -- she is nailing this! Switch, back tuck, great. Lovely attention to detail in her dance. Easy and focused roundoff, double tuck with a step. Wow.

Madeline Gardiner, floor: Full in tuck, steps OOB. Turn with leg at head, lovely. "Dark Eyes," a lyrical version. 1.5 to front layout (she missed the full twist on night one, they're going for consistency). Tourjete half stepout to switch half. 2.5 twist, a better idea than the triple, definitely. Wonderful presentation. Double pike to end, step forward but SO improved from night one.

Rotation twoJuniors on bars/beam, seniors on vault/floor

Warmup notes: Well. Madeline Gardiner, Jessica Savona and Dominique Pegg owned the last rotation. Too bad to see falls from Sarah Flett, Shae Zamardi and Talia Chiarelli. Certainly this makes things interesting.

Silvia Colussi-Pelaez, vault: Didn't see it.

Kaitlyn Hofland, bars: Hit routine with double twist dismount. Big applause from her supporters here.

Sabrina Tomassini, beam: Had a break in the routine, but I didn't see most of it and cannot tell if she fell.

Bianca Dancose-Giambattisto, floor: Will be looking to rebound from that fall on beam here...a lovely orchaestral piece, very playful. 3.5 turn before she tumbles. Whip, bhs, double tuck, very good, tiny hop. Double tuck second pass, little shuffle on the landing. Swing ring to split leap? Illusion turn. Full turn with leg up. Double pike.

Sabrina Gill, vault: The question is whether she will try her Yurchenko 1.5 again after missing it in competition two nights ago...she does! And it's good!

Vivi Babalis, bars: Jump to high, giant to blind, toe hecht to high...blind to front giant, good high double front with a step.

Hailee Westney, beam: Front pike kickover. Comes off on something in what looked like a fairly painful way. Double turn. Side aerial. Front aerial, comes off again. She has beautiful lines for gymnastics...Gainer layout.

Shae Zamardi, floor: 2.5 to punch front to open, hops OOB. Double tuck. So elegant...triple turn, a little off. Wonderful piece of piano music. Great double pike to end.

Krishna Yemany, vault: Yurchenko 1.5, big step forward. Landed with chest a bit forward

Maegan Chant, bars: Geinger, caught to close to the bar but does not stop. Nice full twisting double tuck to end.

Brielle Wilchuck, beam: Switch, scissone. Punch front. Gainer pike.

Jessica Savona, floor: "Smooth Criminal"...Nice Arabian double pike with a tiny hop forward. 1.5 to double tuck, great. Switch, switch side. Full in tuck, gets it around. Really playing to the crowd. Double pike, another great landing! Huge smile, and well deserved!

Anysia Unick, vault: Yurchenko layout with a step back.

Stefanie Merkle, bars: Hit routine.

Makinli Handley, beam: Bhs, layout, leg comes up and she has to fight to save it but does. Then falls on switch half!

Sarah Flett, floor: Full in pike, excellent. Double tuck, perfect. Stuck and legs totally together. It doesn't get any better than that. Switch side half. A violins piece, kind of understated.

Bianca Jordaan, vault: FTY, really well done. She is capable of a double, or so her coach says. After seeing that, not hard to believe.

Casey Carvalho, bars: Sits down the double pike dismount, but she is very young and has been hugely impressive so far. The interior of the routine was very good, just a few tiny form breaks. But she is a new face and one to watch in the future, definitely.

Elise Bolger, beam: Press handstand to middle splits. Bhs, layout. Off on punch front.

Coralie Leblond-Chartrand, floor: Double turn to start. Double pike, very nice. 1.5 to front layout full. Lots of "Allez Coco!" right behind me in the stands...2.5 twist, stumbles forward and OOB. Switch, switch side. She doesn't do the hardest routines, but what she does is very clean, and she's reliable. That's what gets you on World teams.

Taylor Ricci, vault: Didn't see it.

Natalie Vaculik, bars: Hecht mount, full to wonderful Geinger, toe stalder to bail to toe hecht to high, blind to Jaeger, awesome, half turn to giants to nice high full twisting double tuck. Wonderful form throughout. Hit routine!

Marisa Dick, beam: Missed it.

Gabby May, floor: Jazzy music that has a name I don't remember. Double pike. Wild on double tuck and takes a big bounce back. Double full with a hop to end.

Madeline Gardiner, vault: FTY with a small hop.

Victoria Moors, bars: Blind to Jaeger...hit routine with stuck toe front half twist dismount. Great routine!

Victoria Woo, beam: Side somie, tidy. Front aerial, bhs, stops, wobbles. Back tuck. Switch, scissone, check. A little nervous up there...Side somie with straight legs and bends forward, might have touched the beam on that...double full dismount with small hop.

Dominique Pegg, floor: Indian themed music...1.5 to double tuck, step back. Tourjete half, excellent. Really reminds me of Courtney McCool in a lot of ways, in the dance and presentation. Switch ring, switch half. Front handspring, bounder, front layout full to slightly wild single stag. Switch half. Hands down on double pike! Oh too bad. A littel bit tired, it seemed, on that last pass.

Brittany Rogers, vault: Yurchenko 1.5 with a step forward, not bad.

Jordyn Pedersen, bars: Hit routine.

Nicole Chow, beam: Press handstand. Switch ring, very nice and calm. Sheep. Switch. Korbut -- that was a bit unexpected. Front aerial. Bhs, layout, smooth step back. Switch side. This is a really nice routine...Straddle jump, split jump. Great form on everything, dance and acrobatics. Roundoff, double full to very good landing. Emerging talent here.

Talia Chiarelli, floor: Goodness, she moves like Sacramone. Arabian double front, steps forward and OOB. 1.5 to double tuck, small hop. Switch, Tourjete half. Needs to get her legs together in her back handsprings. 2.5 to front layout, really nicely done and stuck. Switch side half. Double pike, very good. Nice ending.

Rotation three: Juniors on beam/floor, seniors on vault/bars

Warmup notesDominique Pegg has opened the door somewhat by putting her hands down on her last pass on floor. But Madeline Gardiner and Brittany Rogers and Sabrina Gill, all of whom are legit challengers, have still to do both bars and beam. Between them, they had five or six falls on those two events alone on night one. Jessica Savona has survived beam, but she still has to do bars, where she too fell in prelims.

Moors warmed up a double turn in wolf position on beam, but had some problems with it.

Shae Zamardi, vault: Missed it.

Sabrina Gill, bars: Clear hip blind to Jaeger. Ricna. Toe stalder to Pak legs apart but swings out of it cleanly. Stalder half to toe hecht to high...full turn, double layout with a step. And she smiles! That's a big routine for her to get out of the way. I'm sure she's incredibly relieved.

Vivi Babalis, beam: Layout stepout off the top. Switch, back tuck, big wobble but oK. Jumps. Did not see the rest.

Hailee Westney, floor: 2.5 twist, might have just gone OOB.

Jessica Savona, vault: DTY with two big steps back. But a DTY!

Krishna Yemany, bars: Hit routine with double front dismount!

Maegan Chant, beam: Press mount. Side aerial, little check. Off on bhs, layout. Too bad!

Brielle Wilchuck, floor: Double tuck to open, OOB. 1.5 to front layout. Drum music.

Sarah Flett, vault: FTY, stuck.

Anysia Unick, bars: Great routine until she overbalanced a handstand on high bar and had to jump off. If you take out the fall, it was terrific -- she hits her handstands better than anyone in the competition. Double front dismount with a small step.

Stefanie Merkle, beam: Bhs, full twist but comes off. Didn't really have a chance to save it. 2.5 twist dismount, rather big step forward. But that's an ambitious routine and she's gutsy for going for it. Gets a well-deserved hug from her coach at Revolution Gymnastics afterward.

Makinli Handley, floor: Front double full to open. Fast paced music, like a chase scene from a "Fast and the Furious" movie. 2.5 to end.

Coralie Leblond-Chartrand, vault: FTY, steps back.

Bianca Jordaan, bars: Jump to high. Blidn to Jaeger, feet flexed. bail to toe hecht to high. Good high full in tuck to end.

Casey Carvalho, beam: Did not see most of this routine. Check on side aerial, bends at hips. 2.5 twist dismount with big step forward. Great fight not to step off the mat on her part.

Elise Bolger, floor: Full in tuck, barely, barely keeps it in bounds. 1.5 to punch front. Double tuck to end.

Gabby May, vault: Didn't see it.

Taylor Ricci, bars: Hit routine.

Natalie Vaculik, beam: Jump on. Switch half, small check. Front aerial, leg comes up but saved. Bhs, layout, perfect. Switch. Back tuck, little wobble. Jumps. Switch side, wonderful! Full turn. Side aerial, great. Now she's comfortable up there. Good double full dismount with a step. Lovely gymnastics.

Marisa Dick, floor: Fell on a front double full, I believe. Jazzy music.

Dominique Pegg, vault: FTY, well done.

Madeline Gardiner, bars: Toe stalder, Maloney to bail to Ray, very nice so far...stalder to blind to Jaeger, great. Full turn to half turn to double pike with a tiny hop. Hit routine! Good girl.

Victoria Moors, beam: Swing through mount. Switch. Switch half. Side aerial. Moving well. Front aerial, little check. Bhs, layout to two feet, no problems. No problems on the double turn in sit position, either. Side somie. Great routine. Double tuck with a step.

Victoria Woo, floor: Missed it.

Talia Chiarelli, vault: DTY, makes it! A rather big step/shuffle on the landing, but she makes it!

Brittany Rogers, bars: WOW. She nails it -- Ricna to bail to toe hecht, Markelov, Tkatchev in combo with a pirouette, and Arabian double front with a tiny step. What determination! Yes, Brittany is definitely back.

Jordyn Pedersen, beam: Long wait before she gets the nod to go...they flash the red flag, then the green one. Press handstand. Full turn in sit position, little wobble and arm flail but OK. Switch. Punch front, one step but fine. Bhs, layout, saves it. Side aerial. Side somie, one foot comes up a little but she's OK. Roundoff, double tuck with a step/shuffle back.

Nicole Chow, floor: Opened with a double tuck, but I didn't see the rest of the routine.

Bianca Dancose-Giambattisto, vault: Very nice FTY! Small step on the landing, but good power/position in the air.

Silvia Colussi-Pelaez, bars: Jump to high, stalder full to Tkatchev, stalder to bail, to stalder half to front stalder and something goes wrong and she comes off. She gets back and repeats the stalder sequence, connecting it with a Ray to high, and a double layout dismount. Bummer though -- that's a gorgeous routine when she hits it.

Kaitlyn Hofland, beam: Scratch? She doesn't compete.

Sabrina Tomassini, floor: A Cirque du Soleil piece of music. Full in tuck. Arabian double front, takes big step forward to save it after landing with her chest low and steps way OOB. 1.5 to double full, big hop forward again. Double tuck.

Rotation fourJuniors on vault/floor, seniors on bars/beam

Warmup notes: If indeed tonight's session is new life scoring (meaning the scores from the preliminaries don't count toward the total), this is a great battle between Brittany Rogers, Sabrina Gill, Madeline Gardiner and Jessica Savona. The junior women's division is probably a battle between Victoria Moors and Natalie Vaculik

Savona missed her Hindorff release in warmups on bars. She gets so much height on it that it can be hard to control...

Brielle Wilchuck, vault: Didn't see it.

Jessica Savona, bars: Hindorff and misses! It was a lot closer than in warmup, however. The rest of the routine was clean, and her full twisting double layout was much better than on night one. Great skills.

Krishna Yemany, beam: Off on bhs, layout to two feet.

Maegan Chant, floor: Double layout, piked at the end but still very good. Nice routine to fairly fast paced music. Double pike to close. Her tumbling is phenominal.

Makinli Handley, vault: FTY with a small step.

Sarah Flett, bars: Hop change to Jaeger...bail to toe hecht...crashes her dismount, though, ending on her stomach. Not the easiest night for her, but her vault was phenominal.

Anysia Unick, beam: Press to handstand, cool wolf position to her knees out of it. Punch front. Front aerial, back tuck, nearly comes off but saves it. Jumps. Off on Okino (triple turn). Does a front layout full dismount.

Stefanie Merkle, floor: Switch half. Didn't see first two passes -- believe they were a full in tuck (or Arabian double) and a triple full. 1.5 to double full third pass. Stuck double tuck to end.

Elise Bolger, vault: FTY, very well done.

Coralie Leblond-Chartrand, bars: Hit routine. Once again, Coralie doesn't do the most difficult skills, but she was clean. Nice landing on her dismount.

Bianca Jordaan, beam: Hit routine, I believe.

Casey Carvalho, floor: This girl can tumble...energetic start. Double pike, good landing. 1.5 to double full. Music is some combination of Austin Powers and James Bond that I will simply call "Heist Movie". Front double full with energy to spare. 2.5 twist to end, step forward. Very promising talent.

Marisa Dick, vault: FTY, a little sloppy in the leg form.

Gabby May, bars: Misses Jaeger.

Taylor Ricci, beam: Off on side aerial. Great roundoff, double pike to end, though, just a small hop and plenty of lift on the somersaults. She's one to watch for in the future as well.

Natalie Vaculik, floor: Heartbeat at the beginning and end of this piece. Lovely piece of music, kind of Spanish guitar. Double pike to open. 1.5 to front layout half. Double tuck, bounces out a little awkwardly. 2.5 with a step forward. Moors has the edge in difficulty on this event, but it was a lovely routine all the same.

Victoria Woo, vault: Yurchenko tuck.

Dominique Pegg, bars: Toe stalder, Maloney to bail legs apart but OK, Ray, full turn to blind and comes off! Didn't have the swing through the bottom. Rough night for her after a very good start to this meet, which is too bad...Jaeger, toe half misses handstand, double layout with a step. Gets a hug and some counsel from coach Dave Brubaker right away.

Madeline Gardiner, beam: Double turn in sold position to splits...switch to scissone. Onodi, lovely. Front aerial, bhs, layout to two feet, fantastic. Switch half. Change leg side aerial, aggressive. Side somie, same thing. Wow. Double pike with a step to the side. AWESOME routine. She nailed it.

Victoria Moors, floor: "Roxanne." Double double tuck with a step back, just awesome. Tourjete full. Playing it up and flirting with the judges! 1.5 to double tuck, very nice, just a little step at the end. Front aerial. Switch, switch half. Saadi is watching, expressionless. Triple full, a little low and really a 2 3/4, but sneaks it around. 2.5 to end, with a step back due to a little bit of underrotation.

Nicole Chow, vault: Didn't see it, but it had a good landing.

Talia Chiarelli, bars: A good routine overall. Legs apart on her Geinger, but nice powerful swing throughout the first half. Rushed the handstand half pirouette after the Geinger, but those two things were the only really large deductions. Double pike to end.

Brittany Rogers, beam: Jump to scale. Front aerial. Switch. bhs 1/4 to stag handstand, tries to lift one hand and falls out of it. Covers it up but going to straddle sit on beam. Kotchetkova. Bhs, layout, solid. Switch half. Full turn with leg up, really good. Jumps. Brittany obviously took time to work on her basics while she was injured. She actually looks much improved in that regard. Bhs, bhs, double twist with a little step. Good routine, even with the mistake on the bhs 1/4 turn to handstand.

Jordyn Pedersen, floor: Full in tuck. Front layout, front layout full. Double turn, tidy. Switch, switch side. Switch half. Double tuck, well done. Reminds me a bit of Rebecca Bross when she was younger.

Sabrina Tomassini, vault: Handspring front tuck half, well done.

Bianca Dancose-Giambattisto, bars: Hit routine! 14.5.

Silvia Colussi-Pelaez, beam: Press handstand crosswise to the beam. Full turn. Side aerial. Off on switch, back tuck. Switch half. Split, wolf. Wonderful sense of movement and presentation. Bhs, layout. Front aerial. Side somie, windmills arms once but saves it. Double pike dismount, just gets it around without sitting down.

Kaitlyn Hofland, floor: Scratch.

Hailee Westney, vault: Stuck Tsuk pike.

Shae Zamardi, bars: Toe full to Tkatchev. Pak with sickled feet...blind to Markelov, stuck Arabian double front dismount.

Sabrina Gill, beam: Press handstand mount...switch, split. Switch half and FIGHTS to save it. (She wins.) Bhs, layout and comes off. Too bad! She used up all her fight saving the switch half. Switch ring, nervous again and wobbles. Front aerial, check, to back tuck, has to fight again to stay on. Punch front. Might be overtime on this routine...roundoff, double pike, very good, but a long, hard-fought routine for Gill and that will likely end her chances of taking the title. This week has been a learning experience...

Vivi Babalis, floor: Double pike, step back. 1.5 to front pike to single stag jump. Running front layout full. Double tuck, a little stumble up and forward because of the spring floor, but a nice routine. Also one to watch for the future.

10:22 p.m.: Oh yeah, the winners:

Seniors: 1. Madeline Gardiner; 2. Jessica Savona; 3. Bianca Dancose-Giambattisto; 4. Brittany Rogers; 5. Coralie Leblond-Chartrand; 6. Talia Chiarelli; 7. Sabrina Gill

Juniors: 1. Victoria Moors; 2. Natalie Vaculik; 3. Jordyn Pedersen; 4. Stefanie Merkle; 5. Vivi Babalis; 6. Maegan Chant; 7. Victoria Woo; 8. Nicole Chow

This is a huge victory for what we'll call the Saadi method. Elvira Saadi and her club, Cambridge Kips, produce the top gymnasts in both the senior and junior division.

Pre-competition warmup notes:

CHARLOTTETOWN, 3:03 p.m.: It's going to be a fun evening. The senior and junior women's all-around champions will be crowned tonight at the University of Prince Edward Island, and after three days of training and waiting, the senior men's competition will finally get underway.

Defending Canadian champion Nathan Gafuik is once again the favorite, but he will have some competition for the senior title this year from some very promising younger gymnasts, including Saskatchewan's Jayd Lukenchuk and Anderson Loran

The women's side is much harder to predict. The gymnasts who did well on night one were the ones who kept consistent, while others struggled with added difficulty. The top three seniors were Dominique Pegg, who finished third all-around, Commonwealth Games team member Kristin Klarenbach and Bianca Dancose-Giambattisto, who competed at the 2010 Worlds for Canada.

Victoria Moors leads the junior women, followed by Gemini's Natalie Vaculik and Kaitlyn Hofland of Gymnastics Mississauga.

Others to watch: Junior Canadian champion Sabrina Gill squeaked into the all-around final after a fall-filled competition in the preliminaries. Gill has some of the most difficult routines in the meet, and many of her skills are still fairly new for her. Although she's competing in the senior division, she is not age-eligible to represent Canada at the 2011 Worlds, so this is very much a building year for her.

British Columbia's Brittany Rogers, who grabbed the last spot into the all-around final, is also a work in progress after an ankle injury that severely limited her training. Aside from Pegg, Rogers is the most experienced gymnast in the field tonight, and she should use that to her advantage.

Canadian-American Talia Chiarelli, competing at her first Canadian Nationals this year, has been impressive. Chiarelli is a power gymnast whose family moved from Ontario to Massachusetts several years ago, but she is looking forward to trying to compete for Canada in the future.

The big question for Chiarelli tonight will be vault -- she finished fifth overall in prelims despite falling on her double-twisting Yurchenko. If she stands it up this time, she will be in good contention to medal due to the score boost she gets from the difficulty of the skill.

Also looking to crack the top three will be Ontario's Jessica Savona, who has a DTY of her own. Like some of her Oakville teammates, Savona struggled on bars during the first night of competition. She has great potential for a medal as well if she can nail the routine.

Notes: Silvia Colussi-Pelaez, who intends to compete for Spain, showed lovely form throughout the women's competition. She is currently 11th overall....21-year-old Sarah Flett, tied for seventh, is a magnificent tumbler...Coralie Leblond-Chartrand, also seventh, was a World team member in 2010 and remarkably steady...new senior Shae Zamardi finished sixth overall in the preliminaries and should be one to watch for as well...the elegant Madeline Gardiner had two falls on floor during preliminaries and is currently ninth, but she will move up if she can just control her gymnastics.

In the junior division, young Maegan Chant is a supertalented tumbler and vaulter, and not bad on bars, either. Chant finished fourth in the junior division but is a real medal threat....ditto Jordyn Pedersen, last year's Novice champion, who was fifth, and Vivi Babalis, sixth.

Sabrina Tomassini, 11th, had a rough meet the first night but is a hugely talented gymnast and will move up in the standings provided she doesn't make mistakes...same with Stefanie Merkle, now eighth...young Casey Carvalho, seventh, is a bright new talent and very exciting to watch.

3:21 p.m.: While we're waiting...why not check out a few more women's training videos? I especially like Demi Pas'schoreography on floor. Pas won't be in tonight's all-around final, but she did make floor finals. That routine is here, and new training things from Sabrina Gill, Krishna Yemany, Jessica Savona and Madeline Gardiner are on the videos page here.

4:49 p.m.: Women's Open division preliminaries. If I were an NCAA coach, I would pay as close attention to this competition as to the junior and senior women's meets. The skill level is high, and the gymnasts look fit and content. Most are already doing what look like NCAA routines on beam and floor.

The gymnast to beat here seems to be Oakville's Jessica Dowling, who competed in the senior division last year and intends to try for the Dutch National team. Dowling's best event is uneven bars, but here she also showed a very nice FTY on vault.

4:59 p.m.Fashion notes! The junior and senior women and the senior men are in the gym and warming up for tonight's women's all-around final and men's prelim! Talia Chiarelli is in the long sleeved purple sparkly Brestyan's number, Brittany Rogers is sporting long-sleeved red and gray, Natalie Vaculik is in long sleeved red with a silver maple leaf and Dominique Pegg looks sporty in red and white. Silvia Colussi-Pelaez is in sleeveless blue and silver. Given the Spanish team's penchant for sleeveless leotards, she'll fit right in.

5:15 p.m.: On night one, I noted in the quick hits that standout Anysia Unick, who won the Nadia Comaneci International in Oklahoma in February, watered back her tumbling on floor. There's a reason -- Anysia had a high ankle sprain recently and is not actually cleared to tumble. Ergo, a very watered back floor routine.

5:22 p.m.Talia Chiarelli continues to struggle a bit with the landing of her DTY.

Sabrina Gill is getting back into the swing of things on uneven bars -- she just did a very clean second half of her routine, including the Pak salto, which gave her problems on night one.

Over on the men's side of the floor, there is some impressive tumbling happening. Nathan Gafuik did an Arabian double pike, and...was that a Randi side pass there, Nathan? Nice!

Robert Watson, who was second to the now-retired Jaylan Birl in the junior division in 2010, just stuck an Arabian double front. Robert, who competed at the Youth Olympics last summer, is a new senior this year.

5:31 p.m.: Today's dumb observation: I find it really impressive (and a little scary) that male gymnasts can just jump up and grab the rings as though they were jumping and grabbing high bar. It seems like a good way to dislocate a shoulder or something.

6:10 p.m.: Young Nicole Chow is quite impressive on uneven bars -- just caught a crisp stalder and a Pak salto. Saw an excellent roundoff, double tuck off beam from Sarah Flett just now too.

6:17 p.m.Dominique Pegg looks calm and focused on beam. And very precise. This could be her night....

6:20 p.m.: Warmups are winding down. Most of the girls look ready to get things going. One of the few left on the competition floor is Natalie Vaculik, who is trying to get in a couple last runs on vault. We should be underway shortly. Good luck to all competitors!
