International stars including Anna Pavlova, Cyril Tommasone, Zoi Lima and many more will round out the rosters at the Bundesliga, or German club league Championships, being held this weekend in Berlin.
German star Fabian Hambuechen has withdrawn from the Bundesliga final, but his team, KTV Straubenhardt, is still favored to win.
It's easy to see why -- Straubenhardt is packed with more stars than some World Cup finals. In addition to the best German gymnasts, the league is very open to letting foreign guests take part, provided that in the four-up team finals Germans are in the majority on each event.
KTV Straubenhardt boasts Marcel Nguyen, Thomas Taranu, guest Maxim Deviatowsky of Russia and 1988 Soviet Olympian Sergei Kharkov. Straubenhardt is most likely to be challenged by TG Saar, which includes German World team member Eugen Spiridonov and Uzbekistani p-bars great Anton Fokin as guest.
Hambuechen, who placed second at the Swiss Cup with partner Elisabeth Seitz a few weeks ago, said he was exhausted from recent meets and an intense training schedule.
"In the last 10 months of rehabilitation I had exactly three free days. I now fully need to recover so I can start the fight again next year," Hambuechen said in a TV interview this week. "I'm crossing my fingers that the team wins the title." Hambuechen also said he wants to consult a doctor again about his Achilles tendon, which he ruptured in January.
Without reigning World silver medalist Philipp Boy, who has traveled to the Tokyo World Cup this weekend, the SC Cottbus team is likely to battle for third place. Also absent will be Kim Buiand Nadine Jarosch, who are in Japan for the Tokyo World Cup.
In the women's competition, MTV Stuttgart, led by sister act Marie-Sophie and Giulia Hindermann, are expected to take the team title. The team also boasts 2011 World team member Pia Tolle.
Also in the lineup are some familiar names who have not recently been seen in international competition, including Anja Brinker, former American Cup competitor Joeline Möbius and Polina Miller, who interestingly is listed as competing for Germany, not Russia.
