Three time World champion Kohei Uchimura capped off his incredible season with a win at home in Tokyo, scoring a mammoth 93.565 to win the all-around at the Tokyo World Cup by more than three points.
World silver medalist Philipp Boy, recovered from a nasty fall at the Stuttgart World Cup two weeks ago, finished second and was the only other gymnast to break 90 points in the all-around. Boy recovered from a fairly low 13.366 on pommel horse to best Uchimura on high bar, 16.0-15.933.
But Boy, who famously declared "I'm in the wrong era" after coming second to Uchimura at the Tokyo Worlds six weeks ago, had to settle once again for silver in the overall competition. Uchimura wholly dominated the meet, posting the highest scores on floor (15.7), vault (15.9), parallel bars (15.433) and rings (15.233, tying newcomer Shogo Nonomura).
Great Britain's Daniel Purvis finished third (89.631) with a strong all-around performance bolstered by excellent routines on floor and pommel horse, followed by 17-year-old Nonomura, fourth in his second-ever World Cup meet (89.237).
The Tokyo World Cup also determined the final standings for the FIG World Cup series this year. The 2011 World Cup champion is 21-year-old Daniel Purvis of Great Britain, whose bronze medal finish in Tokyo made him the most successful all-arounder on the World Cup scene this year.
Purvis won the Glasgow World Cup in May and finished third at the Stuttgart World Cup. Ukraine's Mykola Kuksenkov, who led in points going into the Tokyo Cup, did not add anything to his running total by finishing fifth all-around, and dropped to second in the World Cup standings, tied with Boy.
The International Gymnastics Federation had been planning to offer a bonus jackpot of 50,000 Swiss francs to the overall winners of the World Cup series in men's and women's gymnastics, but announced just before the Stuttgart World Cup that it would not be offering the purse this year after all. The FIG does plan to offer the prize next year, however.
