It's a smaller list than you might have thought.
Ninety-eight gymnasts have qualified to the London Olympics so far, based on the results of the 2011 World Championships, which concluded Oct. 16 in Tokyo. In addition to the eight men's and women's teams to have been awarded berths, these individuals punched tickets to London by dint of being individual medalists:
Men's artistic gymnastics:
- Diego Hypolito, BRA (bronze on floor)
- Alexander Shatilov, ISR (bronze on floor)
- Krisztian Berki, HUN (gold on pommel)
- Cyril Tommasone, FRA (silver on pommel)
- Arthur Zanetti, BRA (silver on rings)
- Vasileios Tsolakidis, GRE (silver on pbars)
Women's artistic gymnastics:
- Phan Thi Ha Thanh, VIE (bronze on vault)
Brazil and France are still very much in contention for team berths to London, but just in case their countries finish outside the top four at the London Test Event in January, Hypolito, Zanetti and Tommasone will still compete on their best events at the Olympic Games.
Note that World pommel horse bronze medalist Louis Smith is not on the list, though he won a medal on his best event in Tokyo. The rules of the game for qualifying to London include medaling on one event as well as competing on two others and having your scores there be 85 percent of the average score by all competitors on the event.
Since Smith didn't do any other events in Tokyo, he only met one of the requirements for receiving an Olympic spot. Fortunately for him, Great Britain looks well on track to qualify a full team to London, despite some slip ups that left them 10th in the team qualification.
