An encyclopedia of Arabian double pikes

The Arabian double pike is becoming more prevalent in women's gymnastics. Yesterday I wrote that it seemed to be a seldomly-used skill. Turns out it's been done by more people than I'd thought! (Thanks, commenters!)

Here's a more updated list of people who have competed this interesting (not to mention difficult) pass.

  • Lisa Marzan -- video
  • Daiane dos Santos (the skill is a dos Santos in the code of points) -- video
  • Jade Barbosa -- video
  • Kylie Stone -- video
  • Darlene Hill -- video
  • Alicia Sacramone -- video
  • Chellsie Memmel -- video
  • Lauren Mitchell -- video
  • Corrie Lothrop -- video
  • Kristina Pravdina -- video
  • Alexandra Raisman -- video
  • Beth Tweddle -- video
  • Kytra Hunter -- video
  • Randy Stageberg -- video
  • Doriane Thobie -- video
  • Cassy Véricel -- video

Gymnasts who have trained the Arabian double pike include Lais Souza (video) and Kristin Klarenbach (video).

Marzan seems to be the first woman to have performed it in competition, back in 2001. Tweddle is the oldest gymnast to have landed it. Raisman and Thobie are the latest to debut the skill in their routines, though Raisman did not use it at the World Championships.

Thobie may not be the youngest to have done this skill, either. Check out this video, pointed out by Igor Almieda, of a very young Jade Barbosa competing at the Brazilian Nationals several years ago. Igor thinks she was 12 at the time.

Montagemaker MostepanovaFan has an excellent video of almost everyone who has performed the skill.

Finally, here's an exceptional video of a young gymnast training an Arabian double pike Rudi out, courtesy of GAGE coach Al Fong. Dunno if we'll see that in competition anytime soon, but wow!

As for the guys, well, a lot of them are doing Arabian double pikes these days (look to Diego Hypolito, Daniel Purvis and Nathan Gafiuk to see them done exceptionally well). Male gymnasts have also begun playing with the Arabian double in combination -- from a whip back, connected to a punch front, or, as Hypolito has pioneered, with a twist in the second somersault.
