New Year’s Resolution? Follow Fast & Furious to the end

As the New Year approaches, it is a good time to make plans for what many are predicting (or warning) could be the turning-point year in American history.

So, here are some New Year's resolutions, which may, or may not, be worth the bandwidth.

This column has come a long way with its coverage of Operation Fast & Furious, and our resolve is to report this story as it continues to unravel, dogging it to the bitter end so that those responsible will be held accountable. Fast & Furious is like a guaranteed full employment act for reporters.

We’re going to keep writing about wolves, whether the living-in-denial fur huggers like it or not (they probably won’t). Ditto mountain lions, feral dogs, mean dogs and their owners, and other public annoyances.

This column has a well-established peeve for poor game management, and we promise to not take any anger management courses to change that.

The new year will bring more math lessons like the one in this column, comparing the number of concealed pistol license holders to the number of Washington CeaseFire members who would like to see those licenses revoked.

We will not always agree with the status quo. Indeed, this column makes a habit of being politically incorrect, and habits are hard to break. Case in point (next paragraph):

We’re going to try very hard to not discuss the “harvest” of game animals in 2012. People harvest wheat and corn. They kill deer and elk, ducks and geese, and other game animals. There is nothing about that to be ashamed of, unless they make a mess of the process. Hunters are more honest about it than some anti-hunter who debates the merits of killing animals while dining on roast chicken or baked salmon, or wearing suede jackets.

We’ll continue to call gun control extremism what it is: Social bigotry, and we will identify the bigots.

We will use terms like “fool” and “moron” as they apply to fools and morons; you know, the sort of people who try to rob gun stores, or those who think letting 2,000 firearms walk into the hands of Mexican drug cartel gunmen is somehow a good idea. (The biggest fools of all are the people who thought nobody would find out, and who now think they're going to slither their way past the Congressional investigations.)

We resolve to look for the unusual, and downright strange, firearms-related news, whether it’s a gun-toting member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns or another cop who threatens to kill a private citizen for legally carrying a concealed handgun.

And we will not overlook the bizarre, though we might have to search hard to beat the recent tale of the guy in Utah who shot his roommate while trying to kill a mouse with a 9mm pistol.

This column has been criticized occasionally for taking “cheap shots” at Liberal Democrats who dug this country into a money pit. Those were not cheap shots; there is nothing “cheap” about the financial burden that this country faces, brought to you by the same people who have earned a reputation for being the Party of Gun Control. Whatever else American gun owners are, they happen to be taxpayers and voters. ‘Nuf said.

Republicans will not get a pass, of course. It’s an election year and everyone is fair game, and some Republicans helped spend that money.

Along the way, we will try to recognize people who continue doing a good job. Included on that list are Congressmen Darrell Issa, Trey Gowdy, Ted Poe, James Sensenbrenner and Jason Chaffetz, and Senators Chuck Grassley and John Cornyn, all of whom have dug into Fast and Furious like the proverbial Alabama tick. Also on that list would be my colleagues David Codrea and Kurt Hofmann, whose coverage of Fast and Furious has been, well, fast and furious. Likewise, CBS reporter Sharyl Attkisson and Fox News’ William La Jeunesse have been on this story like bloodhounds. It takes something very special to go against the current, and they’ve got it.

Over and above all of that, this column will endeavor to not be boring.

And one more thing. We may insult some people along the way, and just so there is no misunderstanding, it will be intentional.
