A Florida Democrat, just named to head the Democratic National Committee, wasted no time yesterday reaffirming the notion that Democrats are “the party of gun control,” and the 15,000 members of the Washington Arms Collectors (WAC) will not be happy, because her plans could directly impact their monthly gun shows in Puyallup and Monroe.
And, like it or not, she just opened a political can of worms that may not help Evergreen State Democrats in 2012, whether running for Congress or the State Legislature. Once again, anyone with a “D” behind their name will face some tough grilling by gun owners because of what just happened. Her story is being carried by The Hill.
Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a fourth-term congresswoman representing Florida’s 20th Congressional District, is a native of Forest Hills, NY. She previously served in the Florida Legislature, in both the House (1992-2000) and then the Senate (2000-2004) before successfully running for Congress. Now she is the DNC’s top “anti-gun,” pulling that favorite buzz word "loophole" out of the party's gun control playbook, as quoted by Fox News:
"We have laws on the books designed to keep guns out of the hands of those that should not have them. We just need to close the loopholes and improve the information available to law enforcement."—Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz
She wants to change federal statute to require background checks on all firearm transfers. That is, she would require Uncle Fred from Tacoma to subject Cousin George in Wenatchee to a background check before selling or giving him that shotgun that’s been gathering dust in Fred’s closet since 1978. She would have all private transactions at gun shows go through the same background check process as one would if buying a firearm from a federally-licensed dealer. No matter that WAC only allows sales of firearms to members, and that all members go through a background check when they join the organization; this is Wasserman Schultz’ answer to violent crime.
As I noted in my book with Alan Gottlieb, These Dogs Don’t Hunt: The Democrats’ War On Guns, this political party has been responsible for all kinds of gun control laws dating back to the infamous Black Codes and New York’s Sullivan Law.
Why Wasserman Schultz wants a new restriction is apparently because Jared Lee Loughner, the fellow charged with shooting Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and killing six other people in Tucson in January was able to buy a firearm and extended capacity magazines from a licensed dealer.
The suspect arrested in the shootings, Jared Lee Loughner…was able to buy a firearm and high-capacity ammunition magazines from local, licensed gun dealers.- The Hill
That’s right. Loughner did not buy his gun at a gun show. Neither did Sueng-Hui Cho, the Virginia Tech killer. Nor did Naveed Afzal Haq, the gunman who shot up the Seattle Jewish Federation offices seven years ago.
Despite previous gun control measures – proposed, pushed and passed primarily by the Party of Gun Control – all three of these people bought their guns at licensed retail outlets after passing federally-mandated background checks.
If Wasserman Schultz really wants to strike a blow against gun crime, perhaps she should flex her muscle on the House Judiciary Committee or the House Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security, and push for an investigation of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ Project Gunrunner and Operation Fast and Furious. As recent revelations by this column, my colleagues David Codrea and Kurt Hofmann, independent blogger Mike Vanderboegh and CBS News’ Sharyl Attkisson have shown, there is plenty worth investigating.
Unlike adding one more federal gun law hoop through which law-abiding citizens must leap before exercising a fundamental constitutional right, adding one more investigation into ATF’s questionable gun trafficking interdiction effort might actually accomplish something.
