Kenneth Melson, acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for the past two years – and the man in charge of the agency when Operation Fast and Furious exploded as a scandal – is stepping down from that position, according to several sources.
CBS News’ Sharyl Attkisson, who has been covering the Fast and Furious scandal for several months, also is reporting this, as is the Los Angeles Times and Fox News. My colleague, National Gun Rights Examiner David Codrea, is also reporting this development.
Northwest gun rights activists have been following the scandal closely as it has unfolded over the past several months.
The announcement was supposed to be coming, possibly at 11:30 a.m. Eastern time today.
So far, there is no word on who might replace Melson.
CBS News is also reporting that Emory Hurley, assistant U.S. attorney in Phoenix, may also be transferred from his job in the Criminal Division to a spot in the Civil Division. Hurley was one of those involved in Fast and Furious.
