“[T]his is not a political issue, but a corrupt bureaucracy issue,” the ATF employee posting under the screen name “Zorro” wrote in the CleanUpATF forum on Mar. 27. “There were problems throughout administrations and political party rule. This monster was fostered by both parties and multiple presidential administrations through lack of oversight and accountability.”
True enough.
Just like it’s not an issue of being pro- or anti-gun. It’s an issue of out-of-control government corruption resulting in murder, which all Americans should want to get to the bottom of.
Not that the Brady Campaign and their camp followers can be bothered with such distinctions. Rather than concern themselves with stopping “gun deaths” caused by the criminal actions of those helping promote the meme that it’s all the fault of weak U.S. laws and greedy gun shops, their primary focus has been to call for even more restrictions on American gun owners and even more power for an agency and administration that resorts to stonewalling and deception in the face of congressional inquiries.
And not that those interested in partisan politics über alles want to see the truth come to light either. Because isn’t it curious who has stepped forward to date?
Sen. Chuck Grassley-Republican.
Lamar Smith and 13 fellow Republican members of the House Judiciary Committee (and incidentally, their March 18 request deadline was also ignored by AG Eric Holder).
Where the hell are the Democrats?
In fact, Sen. Grassley is hamstrung by the fact he is only the ranking Republican member of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Democrat Patrick Leahy chairs the committee, and he has shown zero interest in uncovering the truth. None of the “gun control” Democrats are interested in doing anything other than circling the wagons, protecting the administration, and seeing if advancing more restrictions might distract attention from the whole sordid mess.
So then where the hell are the supposedly “pro-gun Democrats”?
Why has not one stepped forward and demanded full and open investigative hearings in both the House and Senate?
Where the hell are all those NRA-endorsed Democrats? Max Baucus and Jon Tester would sure be nice allies to have, as the Senate is really where pressure on Leahy needs to come from. Where the hell are they? And while he wasn’t “endorsed” last time out due to gun owner outrage (only financed), where the hell is that “true champion of the Second Amendment” Harry Reid?
It’s nice to see Mr. LaPierre finally getting on board the Project Gunwalker bandwagon, to the point where a “shocked” Glenn Beck apparently thinks he’s the “go-to” guy for the straight poop on the story—or at least scripted platitudes.
We need more than that. We need results, with a big “or else” if we don’t get them.
Time and again we’ve seen Democrats pass themselves off as “pro-gun” while the going was easy, if a bill was going to pass anyway, if voting the wrong way would have jeopardized the party retaining a seat…and time and again we’ve seen them betray their gun owner constituents when it became expedient to do so.
OK, NRA, you sold (some of) us the bill of goods on why voting for your endorsed “pro-gun Democrats” was in the interests of those wanting to “Vote Freedom First.” We can’t have freedom if we have a corrupt government. We can’t have freedom if we allow the truth to be buried, and let those responsible for the corruption off the hook.
And, as admitted up front, it really isn’t a partisan issue. There’s no shortage of Republicans who thus far merit “Project Gunweasel” awards of their own.
I once again call on NRA to do more than make statements for the media. I call on NRA to use its power to DEMAND—of every representative and senator it has endorsed and/or given an acceptable grade to—that they in turn immediately and vocally demand from their respective party leadership full and open hearings in both the House and Senate, and escalate their actions to achieve those goals and expose partisan hack stonewallers should their demands be resisted.
I call on NRA to punish politicians who ignore this by withholding endorsements and lowering grades.
Yes, it’s that important. Human lives on both sides of the border are still being endangered by criminals using walked guns.
And I call on everyone who agrees to join me.

90% of Mexican crime weapons come from…
…Central America. According to “U.S. diplomatic cables...”
Not to say that some U.S. guns aren’t making it through:
La Jornada’s publication of the cables follows revelations in the United States about a botched sting operation, “Fast and Furious,” that saw members of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives allow close to 2,000 weapons to be smuggled from Arizona to Mexico over 15 months.
Brady Campaign and the vast majority of “Authorized Journalists”? Got something to say? An apology maybe?

There are no coincidences, because just moments ago I opened an email alert from my friends at Oregon Firearms Federation, who announced that their “lawsuit against the Oregon University System was heard in the Oregon Appeals Court” yesterday over the case of Jeffrey Maxwell discussed in this column back in 2009.

*Note to newcomers to this story: “Project Gunrunner” is the name ATF assigned to its Southwest Border Initiative to interdict gun smuggling to Mexico. “Project Gunwalker” is the name I assigned to the scandal after allegations by agents that monitored guns were allowed to fall into criminal hands on both sides of the border through a surveillance process termed “walking” surfaced.
