A central figure in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Operation Castaway investigation who is currently serving time at a federal facility for illegal firearms sales, has denied an assertion in a July 20 story from The Tampa Tribune:
As a result of the investigation, Hugh Crumpler III, a decorated Vietnam War veteran, acknowledged that he illegally sold about 1,000 guns, shipping the bulk of them to Honduras and other countries in Central and South America.
This paragraph was quoted in a report appearing the same day on Gun Rights Examiner, wherein Crumpler’s detailed explanation of his involvement was presented.
Crumpler has since contacted this correspondent and requested a clarification of the “shipping” claim:
I must tell you that I NEVER shipped any guns out of the country. All the sales I made were legal sales to individuals with U S ID's. That is to say the sales would have been legal had I not made a profit. THEY shipped the guns out of the country.
A Private Seller can sell all the guns out of his collection he wants. But, if you sell guns for a profit you need a Federal Firearms License. I did not have a Federal Firearms License. The buyers passed all the requirements of a Private Sale. They had Florida ID and they said they were legal to buy firearms.
