National news magazines ignore ‘Project Gunwalker’ story, embrace statist fluff

An overwhelmingly “progressive” mainstream press, one that continually stumps for yet more citizen disarmament while for the most part ignoring what should be a major lead story/headline-generating scandal committed by officials they’re supposed to be monitoring, is all atwitter with anticipation for the upcoming royal nuptials.

“All hail Kate Middleton, the woman who can rebrand the British monarchy,” Newsweek editor Tina Brown gushes as she introduces the weekly’s April 3 cover story.

Thank God for that.

A privileged progressive cheering on the regressive political institution of monarchy, invoking the Deity to laud the Divine Right of kings.  How “Freedom is Slavery” Orwellian of her. (And why does Diderot come to mind...?)

Meanwhile, go ahead and search Newsweek for anything at all informing its readers about “Project Gunwalker.”*  The search term “Gunrunner” yields nothing of relevance, nor does “Fast and Furious.” And while “ATF” scores some potentially germane hits, a quick scan shows most of the stories either predate the scandal, and the more current one ignore it altogether, focusing instead on using them to call for more “gun control."

Indeed, on Feb. 3, their investigative reporter Michael Isikoff responded to an email inquiry from Mike Vanderboegh, who asked why no “authorized journalists” were “asking sharp questions” about the scandal. Isikoff’s insistence that he needed to talk to Mike’s sources before doing anything is illustrative of an entitled mindset on the part of someone who is supposed to dig stuff out on his own. This is a position he has evidently not changed, despite being given additional leads and contacts, and the result is Newsweek readers will need to look elsewhere if they’re ever to learn about allegations by veteran agents that our government allowed guns to be “walked” into the hands of the cartels—and this is despite the fact that their lead guy was getting information and having requests made to whistleblowers on his behalf weeks before CBS News first contacted us.

Time Magazine is no better on search terms “Gunrunner,” “Fast and Furious” and “ATF,” telling its readers not a word about how the government finds itself embroiled in allegations and investigations from committee leaders in the Senate and the House—but nonetheless giving them plenty on “The  Threat from the Patriot Movement” and blaming Mexican cartel violence on the U.S. gun  market, claiming:

...Kalashnikovs and AR15s — are behind the vast majority of Mexican gang-killings. Both types of guns have been sold widely in Arizona and Texas since the U.S. ban on sale of assault weapons was repealed in 2004. A 2008 Supreme Court decision reinforces the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, making a future ban even more difficult.

U.S. News and World Report fails the same drill: “Gunrunner,” Fast and Furious,” “ATF”…but curiously, at the late date of March 11 of this year, they are still passing along the completely discredited gungrabber talking point that “More than 90 percent of the guns used in Mexico's drug violence come from the United States, according to ATF officials.”

Perhaps limiting searches to those three terms is short-sighted, and a more refined search would yield exculpatory findings but it should be noted that all three national “news” magazines also fail to produce anything relevant for the search terms “Grassley” and “Issa.”

Why is that, do you think?

Fortunately, though, for news-hungry Americans interested in current stories from a free press dedicated to serving liberty as a watchdog on government, the big three are keeping their eyes on the vital story of the year with no lack of in-depth “authorized journalism”:

Go ahead, search all three sites for “Kate Middleton.”

*Note to newcomers to this story: “Project Gunrunner” is the name ATF assigned to its Southwest Border Initiative to interdict gun smuggling to Mexico. “Project Gunwalker” is the name I assigned to the scandal after allegations by agents that monitored guns were allowed to fall into criminal hands on both sides of the border through a surveillance process termed “walking” surfaced.
