Does Florida gun turn-in program create even more dangers?

"By collecting guns, no questions asked, no background checks, anonymously dropping off a gun, anti-crime activists say they can get illegal and dangerous guns out of the hands of children," Central Florida News 13's Jacqueline Fell writes.

She's referring to the "Kicks for Guns" program, and we're told:

"There are 9 locations to drop off guns with no questions asked.

"If you are bringing in a gun, it must be in a bag and unloaded."

Hold on a second--they're expecting people who don't know anything about guns to be able to safely handle and legally transport them? Is there any effort to let people who may not be familiar with guns know that just because a magazine has been removed doesn't mean the chamber is empty?

And what if we don't have a permit to carry concealed? Here's the exception under Florida law, courtesy of NRA-ILA:

"Persons traveling by private conveyance if the weapon is securely encased, or in a public conveyance if the weapon is securely encased and not in the person’s manual possession."

Does that "no questions asked" cover us during transport, or might we get more "kicks for guns" than we bargained for?

And why exactly is offering a no-risk incentive that rewards gun thieves and/or a convenient evidence disposal facility for "murder weapons" --no questions asked--considered a good thing? It's not like the criminal has been removed from the equation.

Assuming they don't actually kick you when you turn in your gun (although there's nothing to stop them now, is there?), what will you get for being a good Eloi? The article doesn't say, but fortunately, it's not the only one (but the people collecting your guns apparently think they are.) J. D. Gallop at Florida Today has the going market rate for surrendering your best personal defense option:

"Two Brevard County communities plan to trade $50 gift cards for handguns from residents this Friday."

Adds Palm Bay Police Officer Ron Lugo:

"If we can prevent gun crimes from occurring by removing targets of opportunity, that's a win for everyone."

It would seem, Officer Lugo, the "targets of opportunity" are the ones who have been disarmed.

One more example of the Startrek Picard "Make it So" behavior where people wish for things without thinking it through for ramifications and dangers. They want the end result but do not think of the cost of getting there. Stupidity abounds in our society and maybe these losers who turn nin their guns are better off since the odds are like David said they have no idea how to handle a gun in the first place. They won't be killing anyone accidently, their loss to the gene pool is not big deal if they are victims of a crime, and by programs like this those smart enough to hang on to their guns and protect themselves when cops can't will survive because they know how to use a gun on a criminal attacking them.

I wonder how many crimes could be solved by checking the serial numbers on these "no questions asked" guns. I would look for burglaries to go up with guns being the main focus. Then the thieves get 50 bucks each for a nights work. And if this did happen, how many innocent people are going to be hurt in the process. I'm glad I don't live in one of these areas.

An auto or any other valuable and potentially stolen property recovered by the police results in an attempt to return it to its rightful owner. I wonder why firearms are treated differently?

I have yet to figure out what that *&*%$ profanity filter is offended by. But it seems to be effective in blocking about 90% of my posts, none of which have contained any profanity.

David I have always believed that gun buy-backs and no questions asked turn-ins encourage gun theft and crime

Anyone with a brain cell would never sell a firearm for a $50 no matter how much emotion is involved

Why are we having trouble making comments on your articles?

Trouble with comments is because Examiner has done a site redesign and screwed things up 9 ways from Sunday.

Great re-design work. Some articles accept comments, others don't. Some of the ones that do evidently put your carefully reasoned and typed comment in the electronic round file. Then there's the inscrutable, mysterious "profanity filter". You gotta love this stuff.

I think I'm gonna run right down and trade my 1914 Erfurt Luger P08 for a $50 gift card. Whatcha think? Good idea or no? Think the Kaiser Willhelm II crest will bring me anything extra?
