Arizona fugitives cause concern for traveling tourists

One of the terrible outcomes of the “Arizona fugitives” saga is the murder of Linda and Gary Haas from Tecumseh, Oklahoma. While it is not certain the fugitives were responsible for their violent deaths, one fact is firm --- evil people do exist in this world and we require the means to defend ourselves from them.

Blood inside the couple's pickup -- found days later in Albuquerque -- makes the family certain of one thing: The 61-year-olds put up a fight.

No mention was made whether the Haas couple had a firearm to protect themselves, but the it is doubtful they did. They were, after all, residents of a state where citizens are discouraged by both the governor and the Oklahoma State Police from defending themselves.

It isn’t the four-legged animals we are worried about

I was in the same northern New Mexico-southern Colorado area in 2004 on an elk hunt. While camping, I saw resident hunters of the area carrying .45s on their hips, even the bow hunters. Confused about how and why they were carrying (I had never heard of open carry and was still ignorant of my rights), I finally inquired about why they were arming themselves. One native told me it was for self-defense, and when I asked him whether it was for animals, he said, “It isn’t the four-legged animals we are worried about”.

What does the Oklahoma media suggest to keep you safe while traveling and camping?

Karnes suggests carrying pepper spray.

AAA of Oklahoma makes some great points, but give me a break… Pepper spray? I doubt pepper spray would stand a chance against a handgun or rifle in the hands of a malevolent criminal who wants what you have.

The Supreme Court of the United States has ruled the right to defend yourself is a natural right; a natural right is one given to you by God. Use this right. Prepare yourselves for all situations, especially when traveling in areas not well known to you. Exercise your right to defend your life. Educate your family and yourself about gun laws in each state and utilize them fully. Find out which states allow open or conceal carry and consider spending most of your time in those states.

Enjoy your vacations and trips, but do so safely and confidently.
