As I sit with my family, with all our presents unwrapped, I realize that I did not get what I really wanted for Christmas this year: The indictment of U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder for his role in the ATF’s illegal and deadly “Fast and Furious” gun running operation.
Under the auspices of “Fast and Furious” the ATF facilitated the smuggling of thousands of firearms into Mexico where they wound up in the hands of drug cartels. Firearms from this operation have been linked to crimes on both sides of the border including the deaths of hundreds of Mexican citizens and the murder of a U.S. federal agent.
Although the administration continues to paint this operation as a “failed sting,” mounting evidence points to it being part of the Obama administration’s “under the radar” gun control efforts. The theory is that the administration wanted to manufacture a crisis involving American guns smuggled into Mexico to gather support for additional gun control measures in the United States
Although Eric Holder’s Department of Justice continues to stonewall the investigation by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, and the mainstream media continues to downplay or ignore the story, I hold out hope that those responsible will face justice in 2012.
The scandal has not gone unnoticed in the halls of power. At the latest count at least 90 congressmen have either signed a resolution by Rep. Paul Gosar (R- Arizona) expressing “no confidence” in Holder or have otherwise indicated that he should resign as Attorney General. An additional two U.S. Senators and two state governors have also called for Holder’s resignation.
The resignation of the Attorney General would be an event that even the mainstream media couldn’t ignore and would help fuel the investigation into who ultimately authorized and planned this illegal ATF operation. Ultimately, those responsible should not get away with just losing their jobs, but should face criminal prosecution for their actions that have led to uncounted tragedies in two countries.
