Balqon, the maker of electric big trucks and drive systems, has received a purchase order for drive systems from a new dealer in China. The dealer, DynaProTech, plans to integrate the drive systems into electric buses, heavy duty trucks and commercial vehicles for use in China.
The deal is part of what Balqon CEO Balwinder Samra says is their strategy to expand into international markets. The strategy is not just to sell internationally, but for local dealers to "localize" Balqon's drive trains into vehicles suitable for local conditions. This deal in China is the sixth such international dealer arrangement. The others are Argentina-based Autoelevadores Yale, Colombia-based Industrias IVOR, Electric Cars of Costa Rica, Mol Transportation Solutions in Europe and, most recently, Km. Verde in Spain.
China is making strong moves towards clean vehicles as their country modernizes. For example Balqon's website references news that Dongfeng Motor Corp is making a huge investment and big goals for sales of "new energy vehicles". They will invest 3 billion yuan in production of "energy saving and new energy vehicles." Dongfengs goals are to sell 100,000 hybrid vehicles and 50,000 electric vehicles by 2015, and by 2020 to have sold 800,000 alternate energy vehicles.
In late July, the Peoples Daily in China reported on a development plan for the energy industry. Their 12th Five-Year Plan is focused on increased energy efficiency, use of clean energy resources, utilization of wind, solar and biomass, and industrialized adoption of smart grid, distributed energy and alternative fueled vehicles. All these moves make electric vehicles highly practical.
It would seem that Balqon has their sights on being part of greening China's transportation sector.
