Word of the oil rig explosion hit the Web Thurdsay morning September 2, turning it immediately into a top Google trend due to the emergent nature of this news. MSNBC reports that Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer John Edwards said crews were responding to reports of people in the water. It is believed there were 13 people on the rig; one was reportedly injured and 12 were OK but not rescued yet, according to Edwards.
The site of the explosion is approximately 80 miles south of Vermilion Bay along the central Louisiana coast. CNN reports that it was not an active well.
Smoke has been reported but there are no current updates as to whether the oil rig is still burning. Fox News reports that there is a 5 nautical mile air traffic restriction over the Vermilion 380.

Inactive just means they're not pumping from it. The rig could have been there for any number of reasons. There are thousands of capped wells on the floor of the gulf. That doesn't mean that there is a rig over every well.

Anyone else find it odd that BP is investing in all the on land drilling equipment? it is like they are trying to make offshore drilling look really bad so we will stop it then they control the oil market.
