Gluten free 101: Where can I buy gluten free food in San Francisco?

Whole Foods, 4th Street, San Francisco

A lot has changed in the past few years for gluten free eaters. It's one of the fastest growing markets. According to www.foodnavigator.com, this market has grown at an average rate of 28% since 2004. Sales are estimated to be at $2.6 b by 2012. Wow.

What does this mean for you? When companies review trends and where grocery dollars are being spent, that's where their research and development is focused.  They want a piece of the "gluten free" pie. The good news for the consumer is that there will be more and more products available in more stores.

In the San Francisco area, there are many options. If you have a local market that doesn't carry any gluten free products, try making a request.

Here is a list of grocery stores that carry gluten free products:

Whole Foods

Mollie Stones

Trader Joe's

Raley's, Bel-Air, Nob HIll Markets

New Leaf Community Markets

Rainbow Grocery Co-op

Berkeley Bowl

Are there any that were missed? Please leave a comment with the name and location.

We've also had quite a few SF people come check out our all gluten free store, Gluten Free Specialty in downtown, Sacramento. Could be a fun day trip.

The selection at Dragers in San Mateo is wonderful. They have a whole selection in the back of the store and in the frozen food. There is also a club that has started up. Dragers has stores in other Northern California Areas.
