Insanity is taking over our nation. The massacre in Arizona over the weekend is another example of how irrational minds are becoming the dominating force in American politics.
All Topekans, and in fact most Americans, are aware of the Westboro Baptist Church and its hateful rhetoric and behavior. Its latest picketing schedule agenda item is pushing the envelope of what should be tolerated or ignored, and what should be squashed.
According to its website, the WBC will "picket the funeral of Christina Greene, 9-year-old girl killed for (her) rebellion when God sent the shooter to deal with idolatrous America, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, 8560 N. Shannon Rd., Tucson, AZ., Jan. 13, 12:15 - 1 p.m."
"You put that child (& all your children!) in the crosshairs of a raging mad God when you: *Raised her in the Catholic pedophile monster," according to the WBC's news release. "God cut this child off. Obey or perish!"
Often criticized for giving the WBC attention, the mainstream media hasn't yet picked up on this story, but a growing effort via social media websites is focused on building a human blockade to prevent the WBC from getting too close to the funeral site.
And it's about time. Activists often ignore the WBC, claiming the attention simply makes them stronger. But those activists need to take into consideration the victim's families and how the WBC makes those families victims of another sort. Those families need protection from becoming victims again at the hand of the extreme Topeka-based religious cult.
Others say the WBC has the right to protest funerals, but they fail to realize that such protests have been ruled against by the Supreme Court. Their right to protest stops where another's right to privacy begins.
The massacre in Arizona is nothing more than a hate-based crime, fuled by ignorance. As long as rational Americans sit on their thumbs and let hate-based behavior continue, such as that engaged in by the shooter and the WBC, we all lose.

Comments
In case it has escaped your notice, the organization calling itself "Westboro Baptist Church" has no philosophical right to call themselves any kind of church. I fail to see anything biblical or Christian in anything they've said.
Hey how the heck are ya?! awesome update thank you
Hi Tina! I'm baaaaaaack. I always try to keep tabs on the WBC and this planned action is unthinkable to me. Wrote the story basically so I could link to it on FB and get my friends to take it viral. Momentum is growing for the blockade. That poor family.
Actually doing more writing for my National slots ... Democrats and Civil Rights. Also, getting very busy with my activism too.
Is the WBA tax exempt because they call themselves a church?.. CHURCH's places to gather in the name of GOD. I am sad that our soldiers. in honest wars. do fight for the freedom of religion as well as freedom of speech in our country.
Those baptists are terrifying. I'm waiting for something really bad to happen because of them.
