It's time to start thinking about what to enter at the Orange County Fair

Although there are still a few months left before the Orange County Fair starts, it's time to start thinking about what you might want to enter in the Culinary Arts Competition.  Orange County home cooks are encouraged to submit their best sweet treats in one or more of the various categories.  There will be more shows and categories this year, in addition to the annual favorites.

Do you make the best cookies, cake, brownies, bread, preserves or confection?  If the answer is yes, why not enter it/them into the Culinary Arts Competition at the Orange County Fair this year?  You have nothing to lose and possibly a ribbon to gain.  The official registration sign-up information for the 2011 competitions hasn't yet been posted, but is targeted to happen at the end of March.  Keep checking their website.

As in previous years, an OC Fair ticket is presented for each contest/competition entry.  It's a win-win, since it costs less to enter most competitions than it does to enter the Fair.  You'll be set with an admission ticket before the Fair even starts and excited to learn the results of your submission(s) when you arrive.  It makes the Fair experience all the more special.

New food-related categories include... Sugar Arts, Bars & Brownies, now separate from the Cookie Division, and two shows of the Cheesecake Division and Pie Division.  And new Single Day Competitions will include a Fast & Fit Recipe Contest, a Celebration on a Stick Contest, and a Lavish Lunch Bags Contest, to name a few.  The Single Day Competition entry deadlines differ from the Culinary Arts Competition.

Many Single Day Competitions can be entered after the Fair starts, but entry into the Culinary Arts Competition ends way before the OC Fair begins.  This post is a warning to those who usually commence thinking about it too late.  Miss the deadline no more.  Check back here.

Also, original to any Fair this year is the Recipe Blog Post Division, which breaks down into three categories... a Step-by-Step format with a recipe, a Memoir with a recipe, or Descriptive or Historical Event Coverage with a recipe.  All will be judged for quality of writing, photographs and content.  For more specifics, see here.  It should be an interesting competition.  Mark your calendar, make a plan, enter your goods, deliver your goods, pick up your Fair ticket, and show up when it opens to see if you've won a ribbon.

Update: You may NOW enter the Culinary Arts Competition online.  The Culinary Arts Guide can be viewed here.  You may enter online today through June 1, 2011 -- Immediate entry/registration is linked here.  Good luck!
