Healthy Irish Soda bread recipe

Healthy Irish Soda Bread

Looking for a healthier Irish Soda Bread recipe? This egg-free Irish Soda Bread is made with King Arthur white whole wheat flour and honey. Feel good about St. Patrick's Day this year by using good-for-you ingredients!

King Arthur Flour Company came out with this wholesome White Whole Wheat Flour for people like me. I wanted something heartier than plain old white flour, but not quite as heavy as heavy whole wheat flour. King Arthur says, "Unless you love the somewhat assertive flavor of traditional whole wheat, we strongly urge you to use this white whole wheat—or our organic white whole wheat—for your whole-grain baking. Lighter colored, milder tasting, and a somewhat finer grind, it acts much more like white flour in baking."

I love King Arthur so much, that they sent me a big box with their brand new cookbook, "King Arthur Flour Whole Grain Baking", and a 5 pound bag of their new White Whole Wheat Flour, just to try it out and review it for them!

Healthy Irish Soda Bread Recipe

  • 4 Tablespoons butter or margarine (1/2 stick), melted
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 1 cup soy or whole milk
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 1/2 cups raisins
  • 9 cups King Arthur White Whole Wheat Flour
  • 2 teaspoons sea salt
  • 3 Tablespoons baking powder
  • 2 Tablespoons baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons caraway seeds, optional
  • cornmeal

How To Make Healthy Irish Soda Bread

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Line baking sheet with parchment paper
  • Combine butter, buttermilk, milk and honey in a large KitchenAid mixing bowl, or large stainless bowl, and mix with the whip attachment, or hand whisk until well blended.
  • Add raisins, flour, sea salt, baking powder, baking soda and caraway seeds, and mix only until combined, and no dry ingredients are left in the bottom of the bowl.
  • Gently form into 4 round loaves. Dip bottoms only in cornmeal, and place on prepared baking sheet.
  • Very carefully slit an X into the top of the loaves - not too deep - just enough to make a mark.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 45-60 minutes, depending on size and oven temperature. Breads are done when golden brown and it sounds hollow when tapped.

I'm excited to try this recipe! I'm allergic to soy and have to make my own breads (which I don't always have time to do), but this recipe sounds quick and easy!!
