Oscar Mayer Fully Cooked Bacon

Oscar Mayer Fully Cooked Bacon is now on display in stores such as Stop and Shop. The package indicates that it contains 15 slices of fully cooked bacon, weighing a total of 2.1 oz. This package was selling for $3.99, compared to $5.69 for a pound of regular Oscar Mayer bacon.
According to the package, this is 100% real bacon, and the package need not be refrigerated until after you open it. There are no unusual ingredients listed on the package: the bacon is cured with water, salt, sugar, sodium ascorbate (vitamin C) and sodium nitrite.
Although some trepidation is in order in trying products like this, the bacon had a strong bacony (smoky) smell and flavor and did not taste "off" other than the fact that the taste was very strong.

| Inside the box, you will find a plastic box with bacon slices interleaved with layers of paper. Spreading them out, you will find 15 reasonably substantial bacon slices. While they claim that there is "No Mess and no Cleanup," he bacon was rather tough and dry if not heated. To heat it, you wrap it in paper towels and microwave it for 25 seconds or so. This, then, would require some cleanup | |

After microwaving a few slices, the bacon shows grease on the surface, but becomes tenderer, at least until it cools back down. You can then use it on cheeseburgers, for example, or in salads in wraps as the package suggests. However, since frying a hamburger makes some mess, you could just as easily add a couple of strips of raw bacon to the pan and achieve the same effect. You could NOT however, use it to make bacon and eggs, as the bacon fat needed to fry the egg has already been rendered out. |

The Fully Cooked Bacon package contains 15 slices, much as a pound of bacon does. However the package indicates that 4 slices contain 70 calories, while ordinary Oscar Mayer bacon contains 70 calories in two cooked slices. (This is rather arbitrary, of course, depending on how long you cook your raw bacon.)
However, as you can see in the illustration below showing two Fully Cooked Bacon slices (left) and two regular Oscar Mayer bacon slices (right), the Fully Cooked ones are substantially smaller.

In summary, the Fully Cooked Bacon slices are better tasting than you might expect, but are rather tough and dry unless heated, and revert to being somewhat tough after they cool back down. They also seem to have quite a strong taste and smell compared to ordinary bacon.
It is difficult to compare prices of raw versus cooked bacon, but it you use the calorie count as a guide, an equivalent amount of cooked bacon would cost $7.98 versus $5.69, making it about 40% more expensive than raw bacon. You could use the slices chopped in salads and sandwiches, but not anywhere where the toughness might stand out.

Sounds like a good, quick alternative... one that my teenage son could use on a daily basis. Bacon on sandwiches, bacon on salads, bacon, bacon, bacon!
Since you changed how many strips on each sheet, the product tends to have them stuck together. tear when you try to take them apart. Also they are not cooking good anymore. i have used this product for several years and when i started it was wonderful. The bar code on my last package 4470001984. use by date June 2011. Next package will be a different brand to see how it measures up.
