Youth fitness 101: What childhood obesity prevention programs are available in Phoenix?

Many parents are concerned about the rising rates of childhood obesity in the U.S. Children who are considered overweight or obese  has doubled from 15 percent in the 1970's to nearly 30 percent today. The percentage of those overweight children considered obese has tripled.

There are multiple causes for this increase in childhood obesity.  The problem with solving this crisis is deciding which causes to address first. While the policy makers try to figure that out, parents need to step up and take the first steps in protecting their own children, especially if your child is overweight. It may seem overwhelming for parents to take on this task, but there is help available. Here are some of the programs available in the Phoenix area.

  •  F.I.T. Families in Training may be an option for some parents. F.I.T. is a school based program offered through the Phoenix Children's Hospital's community programs. It is offered at various schools throughout the Phoenix area. It is part of the Kid's Rock Stars, walking and running program. The program offers healthy eating classes with a physical activity component. For more information on this program, call  (602) 546-3351.
  • The Safe Routes to School program  works with schools, communities and local governments to create walk to school programs, or what is sometimes called a "walking bus." The exercise helps children arrive at school energetic, alert and ready to start the day. Parents can start their own "walking bus" If their child's school does not have one.
  • Jump Start! Kids Fitness provides structured physical activity classes for 3 to 6 year olds.  Jump Start! creates partnerships with pre-schools, day care facilities and community centers. Classes are available to the public at Tumbleweed Recreation Center through the City of Chandler.  The program serves several communities in the greater Phoenix area
  • The South Phoenix Healthy Kids Partnership is a collaborative effort between many agencies, non-profits, private business, schools, health plans and government entities who are committed to aiding in the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity.  The partnership is dedicated to promoting healthy eating and optimal physical activity. Visit their website for a complete resource directory.
  • Kids in the Kitchen is a program promoted by the Junior League of Phoenix. The goal of this program is to empower youth to make healthy lifestyle choices and help reverse the growth of childhood obesity and its associated health issues. Kids in the Kitchen has an interactive website for parents and children that includes healthy recipes, games and activities.

In addition to these resources, there are also many dedicated personal trainers and dietitians ready to work with you, your child and other family members to create programs and lifestyle solutions that last a lifetime. For your child to be successful it's important to include all family members.
