Odds makers have Manny Pacquiao as a 6-1 favorite over Antonio Margarito. Last weekend's match-up between Randy Couture against James Toney had Couture at a similar favored line against Toney. You probably know what happened to that one, if not, well Toney wasn't even able to land a single punch on Couture and was absolutely embarrassed into submission. Do odds makers really expect it to be that one-sided?
Well one thing's for sure, a lot of Pacquiao fans think so. And that's exactly why the betting lines are stacked up so high against betting for Pacquiao. In reality though, this match-up will be a lot closer than the 6-1 suggests and definitely more competitive than Couture vs. Toney.
One glaring thing that stood out when Pacquiao stood right next to Margarito during the press conferences in LA last Tuesday and New York Wednesday was Margarito's towering height advantage. Truth be told, this fight wouldn't even have been allowed had it happened prior to Margarito's hand wrap controversy. So in that line of thinking, do people really think Margarito won his fights simply because he cheated?
Back when Pacquiao was thrashing Oscar Dela Hoya in the ring in 2008, HBO commentator Jim Lampley made a comment that the possibility of Pacquiao fighting Margarito at 147 seemed improbable due to the Tijuana Tornado's imposing physical advantages. Yes, Margarito has similarities with Dela Hoya, but he is definitely much stronger and will be able to pull the trigger. Plus, Margarito's fight with Pacquiao isn't at 147, and Pacquiao will be definitely giving away some advantages to Margarito by allowing him to fight at 151 when Pacquiao himself had never weighed in more than 145 in any of his fight weigh-ins.
And the biggest advantage for Margarito other than his size is what he is fighting for. Margarito is a disgraced boxer with nothing to lose. Regardless of how devastating his loss was to Mosley, I believe he wasn't mentally all there when he climbed the ring. He had just gotten caught with loaded gloves a couple of hours before the fight and with future was uncertain, I think a lot played in Margarito's psyche.
Margarito will be the biggest opponent Pacquiao has ever had to face. I'm sure his speed will do a number on Margarito like it has against everybody else, but if he is coming in thinking Margarito will just stand there like Clottey and Dela Hoya, he's got another thing coming. This will be a highly competitive fight and Margarito can definitely score a lot of points with the volume of punches he throws in a fight. If his new trainer Robert Garcia can help his maximize his glaring height and reach advantage and throw a lot of jabs, this might not be such a bad value bet. One thing's for sure, you can't count Margarito out.

in picture this seems to be a mismatch for a smaller pacquaio. with all the physical advantages of margarito, you think that he will just need to bully pacquiao, run over him and take the fight with either unanimously or via ko. in reality and actual fight, i imagine pacquaio doing the opposite, chasing margarito with multiple punches, margarito retreating and covering alternately his face and body. in the end, margarito cannot bear with the speed and the number of punches, ultimately the end for him in the 10th round. the funny thing again in this fight as we have witnessed with pacquaio's previous fights, it is him again doing the chasing of the supposed bigger men....and this fight will not help make the floyd-manny fight to happen. instead this will make floyd run again and ultimately not fight pacquiao. damage will be just the same as cotto had experienced in the ring with pacquaio!

Furthermore, odds are not set based on comments of Pacquiao fans as you suggest. Bets are placed a day and fight night and are adjusted depending on betting interest of the high rollers. The premise of comparing odds on the MMA fight to this boxing match is interesting but your execution is sloppy. In your title "Examining the size.." ends with "Margarito is tall". Where is this examination you proposed to offer in your title that made me read this?

Well written analysis. The only disagreement I have is, it's assumed that Pacquiao is going to win the fight, how about if Margarito wins, I'm sure that the fight between Mayweather and Paqcuiao is not going to happen, but fight between Margo and Floyd could perhaps come into fruition. What will Pacquiao do if he gets beaten badly, esp an early TKO? Retire or go back to welterweight and defend his belt against the top contender in the likes of Maidana, Khan, Berto or Bradley? If he does, it's difficult to gage right now if the congressman can still draw millions of fans to watch his fight, but who knows.

Margarito is for sure the toughest test so far for Pacquiao. Margarito has all the edge when it comes to physical aspect. Manny should concentrate on this to defeat the giant. But win or loss, Manny will again go down in boxing history as the only boxer to try to win an eighth world title in as many weight division. I for one, believe Pacquiao will emerge victorious. Knock out in early rounds.

I am such a boxing fan and i have watched some of the fights of Margo and almost all fights of Pacquiao. Margarito is going to be a tremendous test for Pacquiao; height advantage, punching power, tested chin, reach and even the crowd is going to run down for Margo come fight night since Latinos will be pouring out Jones wealthy colliseum. YES...think Cotto. So what is going to happen is Margo initiating the fight while Pac can change either way, initiate as well and in a defensive mode.
