It was tough to imagine that she would actually compete this season, but she made it official today. Olympic champion Yuna Kim will go a step beyond skipping the Grand Prix series and will sit out the entire 2011-2012 season. There had already been rumblings during the off-season that she may not compete this season.

Kim told reporters today that she is giving herself a longer break from competitive skating, saying, "After the Vancouver Olympics last year, it's been a whirlwind of activities on top of all the preparations for competitions. I felt I needed to take a breather."
Last season, Kim opted to skip the Grand Prix series but returned in April of this year to skate in her one and only competition, the World Championships, where she finished with the silver medal. Earlier in the month, she was named by the International Olympic Committee to serve as ambassador to the inaugural Winter Youth Olympic Games, which will take place in January 2012.
