Does Manny Pacquiao know what supplements his trainers are giving him?

Manny and team during the Cotto fight (AP Photo)

Amongst the furore that the extra testing Floyd Mayweather and team have demanded for their showdown, Manny Pacquiao is seemingly in the dark about what exactly he is taking with regards to supplements.

It isn't totally uncommon for a fighter or athlete to take whatever they are given without too many questions. After all, Manny's job is to fight, his trainers are the ones who make it their business to know what he can and cannot take.

The problem of athletes in all kinds of sports not keeping a tight reign on what they are taking is much more widespread than boxing. While the extra tests almost certainly won't show Manny to have taken anything untoward, the worry is always there when he isn't in control.

As reported by BoxingScene, Alex Azira said:

“I am the one in charge, I’m the one responsible for what Manny takes. He has no idea what he takes. He is on the same thing that Amir Khan (WBA light welterweight champion), Vanes Martirosyan’s on and I don’t give my guys any steroids. What I give them is all natural and its my own special blend of different things.”

Now obviously, Alex Azira is a respected coach, and the last thing he would do is feed Manny any illegal or otherwise performance enhancing substances. It does raise the question of why Manny doesn't know what he is being given to take on a daily basis however. Many athletes are caught with something in their system that they have either never heard of, or that their trainers told them is legal and safe.

The fact is that often even trainers aren't completely aware of what different supplements contain and what exactly constitutes a banned substance. I'm not talking about steroids necessarily here, which are obvious, but even things such as common cold medicines and headache remedies often contain such a mixture of different chemicals that athletes cannot take them. Coincidentally this is one of the reasons that certain athletes seem to need a lot longer to recover from common ailments than ordinary people. Either they can take medicines which contain banned chemicals and then sit out while the substances clear their systems, or they can take much longer to recover without many of the best treatments.

Some of the more common medicines and otherwise seemingly harmless ways of inadvertently taking a 'performance enhancing substance' include: Ginseng Tea, Diabetes medication, ADHD medication, Asthma treatments, diet supplements and cough and cold medicines such as Actifed, Alka Seltzer, Bayer, Benadryl, Clorafed, Chlor-Trimeton, Comtrex, Dimetapp, Dorcal, Dristine, Drixoral, Efidac, Excedrin, Mytussin, Naldecon, Nyquil, Pediacare, Primatene, Rescon, Robitussin, Sudafed, Theraflu, Triaminic, Tritann, Tussafed, TussOrade, Tylenol and Vicks.

Obviously as well as each of the medications mentioned above there are also various other brand names and generic medicines, not to mention any number of other things whcih contain one or more of the banned chemicals, even if only in tiny amounts. A lot of what athletes are not allowed to take is questionable as to whether it even improves performance anyway. For example marijuana has mild anaesthetic qualities, but given the other effects, could hardly be called performance enhancing for any kind of sport that requires either a weight limit or hand to eye coordination.

First of all, I appreciate you for your writing and your research and it seems you have knowledge about all these medicines, PED, supplements etc but they are theories of yours that you researched in a span of what? 2 days?or 1 week at the most?

These pro trainers, conditioning coaches etc have knowledge of all these things you are questioning based on extensive studying whether through their continued education, experience, seminars maybe most of their lives because it is their profession and took them a lot of years to learn because it is their profession, life, reputation that is on the line unlike you who researched due to questioning a very big achievement of a humble, extra ordinary PINOY BOXER in MANNY with the help of his team..

It is so IGNORANT OF YOU BECAUSE YOU THINK YOU TALK LIKE A DOCTOR because you researched about these meds and supplements?LOL

Scott, I understand your concern for fighters like Pacquiao. But you, at the same time, implicitly impute ill-motives on Ariza by bloating emphasis on that one line: "He (Pacquiao) has no idea what he takes."

Had you broadened your research a little more, there were previous interviews (e.g., Philstar.com) given by Ariza on the same subject wehere he explained that he won't even prescribe Manny certain over-the-counter painkillers because Ariza is aware that they contain some elements of steroids. Added to the fact that Manny is known to refuse even taking Advil, a non-steroidal med.

It's obvious your spin in this article is to impugn malice to that of Ariza's one line. But, hey... you gained some hits, eh!

this is a ridiculous demand on the part of the Mayweathers and and if I were Manny I'd say so and that I'm not obliged to concede just to satisfy their whims and allay any fears they may have. I'd say that that the only test I'd go through is what the Nevada State Athletic Commission requires of me and if it requires me to go through additional tests, I'd go through them as well, but not because the Mayweathers demand so. I'd say the Mayweathers better not start dictating to me because I'm not dictating to them. I know I'm clean, and I've proven it every fight I've had, and I'm not obliged to prove it to the Mayweathers or to the Malinaggis or Citrons or whoever is hanging on to my coattails, by any other tests not required of me. Again, if I'm required by the Commission, I'd do it, because I know I'm clean, but not otherwise, especially not because anybody demands it. I'm not going to make myself a specimen for somebody else's satisfaction. If they have anything against me,prove it!

It appears that the more article is being made in connection with Big floyd accusations, the more the damage is inflicted to the Nevada State Athletic Commission that administers drug tests to pacman and their silence are disturbing for not defending their integrity since the suggestion of team mayweather of an olympic-Style testing is a slap on the face on the above-cited commission.

If they can't prove it, they better shut up! If they can't accept the fact that my accomplishments are through faith, and hard work, and dedication, and discipline, that's too bad. But I'm not going to kowtow to them and submit my body to public humiliation and ridicule just so I can prove to them that I'm clean. I'm not obliged to do that. They said they want to protect their fighter. What, protect him at my expense? If I were Pacquiao, I'd turn down this demand because it's ridiculous and it shows that he is being pushed around. If they backed out of the fight, then so be it,it's their loss and it just shows that they didn't really want to fight me. I couldn't care less, because I don't need Duckin'
Mayweather to seal my legacy, it's already sealed, he needs me to seal his! I could retire right now and I'd just be fine, legacy wise. Come on, Manny, don't make yourself their instrument to prove their case, even though you know they can't prove it. It's just the principle ofthe thing

Chicago Guy is correct. Manny is onto "balut".

One native speed enhancer that Pacman takes (and he admitted this) is the "tinolang manok". This "supplement" really works and its effects is like that of a fighting cock (rooster).

When Manny was just growing-up in the province, he was also taking native "supplements", He took the most powerful strength enducer called: "bigas na may mais" and the reflex enhancer called: "kamoteng kahoy". This is not a secret in his homeland. These so-called "supplements" will not show in any modern scientific examination.

If you are to further investigate Manny and this steroid accusations, research first these native Philippine "supplements" that Manny is taking.

i am now beginning to think that almost all the writers their in america are now writing about various allegations about manny pacquiao, maybe because of insecurities, they knew realized that pacquiao is the greatest boxer of all time. One thing they cannot accept is that the GOAT is come from a third wold country in which they considered as an inferior race. Maybe if pacquiao is an american, he would definitely received all the accolades that armstrong and other black fighters had got. They cannot accept the fact that a fighter that come which is come from a third world country have superior skills compared their boxers (boring boxers?)
In fact, if we trace the history of martial arts, America and other western countries (except Brazil) have no background at all. Martial arts were came and designed only in many Asian countries that are belong to the third world countries (except japan and korea).

Why don't you ask the same questions about Mayweather? He's gone up in weight far more and actually looks more muscular than Manny. And yet you continue bringing up this topic to get it in as many people's head as possible.

Common PR tactic -- when you repeat the same lies often enough, people start believing them.
