A study done by the Environmental Law Foundation (ELF) revealed that a large number of juice and baby food brands, including organic brands, exceeded levels of lead that would be dangerous for the 6 and under age set.

A published the list of products tested for lead (PDF) and listed the brands that exceeded the CA Prop 65 limit of 0.5 micrograms of lead per serving and those who did not exceed it.

ELF also tested packaged peaches, pears and fruit cocktail – this list is on the ELF website.

According to ELF’s press release [PDF]:

Scientists agree that there is no safe level of exposure to lead. Lead accumulates in
the body from multiple exposures over time and from multiple sources. According
to Dr. Callahan, “Lead exposure among children is a particular concern because
their developing bodies absorb lead at a higher rate and because children are
particularly sensitive to lead’s toxic effects, including decreased I.Q.” Lead
exposure also represents a heightened risk among pregnant and nursing women
because lead passes from the mother to the developing fetus or infant.

No one knows where the problem lies. Is it present in the fruit itself from pesticides, or added unintentionally somewhere along the manufacturing process or in the lining of the juice box itself? It did not matter if the product was organic or conventional, both types were equally hit.  Many scientists, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, now say that there is no safe level of exposure to lead.

Take this as an opportunity to be creative in the kitchen and make your own juices and lemonades.  Kids under two should hold off on juices focusing on drinking milk and water.  Kids two to five years of age aim around four ounces of juice diluted.  Remember, fruit eaten in its natural state is best.
